It's been two entire years since the release of PlayStation3.
In the United States *and* worldwide overall, PS3 is still in 3rd
place, thus last place, behind
Xbox 360 and Wii. Even with several sales-surges in 2007 and 2008,
PS3 has not been able to overtake Xbox 360 in the U.S., Europe and
worldwide. Respected game industry publications have stated they do
not think PS3 will break even for Sony, through its entire life
cycle.
It is widely expected that Sony will move forward with a lower-cost
PS4 in 2011 with only modest hardware upgrades beyond PS3 and thus PS4
would not be a generational leap over PS3 or Xbox 360, leaving the
door wide open for Microsoft to have the most powerful console next
generation with the successor to 360. >> Stay informed about: two years after release, PS3 still in LAST place in U.S. and |

BTW I am not an anti-Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo fanboy.
I own all current-gen and last-gen console & portable platforms
(except GBA) DC,PS2,GCN,Xbox - DS,PSP,Xbox360,Wii,PS3
and I buy (and download) games for all my systems. I enjoy all the
games that interest me for every platform. I've bought almost every
single game platform since the 16-bit generation started with the
Genesis & TurboGrafx.
systems I don't have:
GameBoy, GameBoy Color, Virtual Boy, GameGear,
Commdore CD32, Fujitsu FM Towns, Atari Jaguar, NeoGeo Pocket/Color >> Stay informed about: two years after release, PS3 still in LAST place in U.S. and |

Nintendo is an altogether different beast from Microsoft and Sony.
Microsoft and Sony started off selling their hardware at tremendous
losses in order to build a respectable install base that will buy
their games, where they really make their money.
Nintendo, on the other hand, makes money right off the bat with their
console sales (they have priced a system at any point in its life such
that they weren't making a profit on the sale of the hardware). They
have a much higher percentage of first party games than their
competitors *and* those first party games tend to be the best selling
ones on the system.
Nintendo doesn't NEED its gamers to buy tons of games this generation,
which is more about expanding the market for them. They hope that the
people who are buying the Wii now will buy the next console from them
based on the fun they had with this one. >> Stay informed about: two years after release, PS3 still in LAST place in U.S. and |

So what's your point then ? I have all 3 consoles & don't enjoy my PS3 any
less despite what position it is in. In fact I find I currently play my Wii
the least of all 3, despite how well it sells.
At least my PS3 didn't need to be replaced 6 times like the flawed in

Console sales aren't the most important figure - the number of games
sold is. For example, those who buy a Wii buy the fewest games.

I have to say that this is the first time I've heard of a Playstation
3 dying. I imagine I've watched many dozens of Blu-Ray movies, if not
more, as well as several dozen DVDs and video files transferred to the
hard drive without so much as a hiccup. Oh, and I have played a few
games here and there. >> Stay informed about: two years after release, PS3 still in LAST place in U.S. and |

The Wii is in second place and the PS3 is just behind it. However,
WiiSports is included in the games used to come up with the attach
rate so in reality the Wii is probably a bit behind the PS3.
This just goes to show how important the install base is. The Wii
makes up for the worst attach rate with sheer number of software
purchases.

Keep in mind that Wii Sports is always the top or second best selling

My 360 is still chugging strong after 100s of hours of game play, whereas my
PS3 died after playing maybe a dozen movies.
I'm not too thrilled with Sony right now...

The Wii attach rate is currently 5.5 or so (but is in reality 4.5
because Wii Sports comes with every system). The Xbox 360 attach rate
is currently 8.1.
This calculates to 183 million games for the Xbox 360 and 162 million
games for the Wii (using the more accurate 4.5 number) with about 1
year less for the Wii to build up both console and game sales. If even
just half of all Wii owners bought 1 extra game right now, the Wii
would be almost tied with the Xbox 360 in terms of total games sold.
Number of games sold is very important for Microsoft and Sony because
they make the most money in software sales but without good hardware
sales, you're dead in the water. >> Stay informed about: two years after release, PS3 still in LAST place in U.S. and |

the UK top 10 is currently dominated by wii games week in week out - maybe
it's new owners each week but i doubt the software companies care about
that.
