Dragging our tired soles back from the XBOX event we just had to bring you
some details before calling it a night. We're posting a bunch of footage of
the event tonight, and tomorrow we'll bring you an overview edit.
First, let's set the stage - the Shrine Auditorium was decked out with a
large array of moving lights, image projections, and video screens.
Projected motivational phrases on the walls included "no such thing as being
too good", "create more questions than answers", and "keep hurting the
people closest to you". One of my personal favorites was ";konichiwa,
hashbrown". Clearly most of these were for the fps fans.
They had a few announcements of note: The XBOX360 will be backwards
compatible with the original XBOX. Square Enix is developing software for
XBOX360 starting with Final Fantasy XI. XBOX Live Silver will be free. And
then there were the featured new 360 titles: DOA4, Lost Odyssey, Project
Gotham Racing 3, Ghost Recon 3, NBA2K5, Kameo - Elements of Power, Call of
Duty 2, Elders Scrolls 4 - Oblivion, Gears of War (a new Epic game using
their Unreal 3 engine), Need for Speed Most Wanted, The Godfather, FIFA '06,
NBA Live, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and Madden NFL '06. There was brief glimpse
of Perfect Dark Zero but only in the walkout reel. Conspicuously absent was
any mention of Halo.
Once the presentation ended the crowd gathered outside in and out of several
dome tents full of food stations and video testimonial booths. Mountain Dew
was there with a giant tanker truck full of "Game Fuel".
Then in the large auditorium, the party ran until 1AM with entertainment
from the Killers and the Chemical Brothers. In this room we saw the
interactive video display Elijah Wood jumped in front of at the end of the
MTV launch last week, the 360-in-a-museum-case featured on many internet
sites prior to the MTV launch and most importantly, a few 360 controllers
that we could hold. And yes, they feel great. They have captured everything
good about the controller S and made them better (and wireless, of course)
