The sad thing, he's probably right.
I had a coworker succumb to "gotta-have-it-itis" and actually bought a PS2
off Ebay for $700. No bundle, just the console. He bought a few launch
titles for it, and then....gave it to his cousin about 4 months later.
You know that the initial shipment is going to sell. Even at ~$800 (PS3 +
games + accessories) there's still going to be plenty of hardcore gamers,
gadgeteers, ebay profiteers, and insane parents to not only sell out the
first shipment, but keep demand sort of high until units start shipping in
decent numbers after the holiday. Granted, the demand isn't going to be
as high as it was for the PS2 or 360, but when your inventory is still
selling out, that doesn't really matter.
Then next year when manufacturing catches up with the initial demand,
we'll start seeing stock on the shelves. At this point, it'll be
interesting to see what happens. Will the PS3 continue to sell, or will
it just sit there - just as the 360 is just 'sitting there' on shelves in
Japan.
