Hi together,
I am currently playing as LooseLand in the Changeling Blitz.
I am still a newbie, as I stated before, so maybe I am doing stupid,
or at least strange, things in your eyes at the emp_client prompt. But
hey, that's just me playing and learning...
Try typing "route foo *" in your emp_client, with foo being your
favorite commodity, and watch the ASCII output running down your
console, funny, isn't it?
Also path and route doesn't show me my distribution sectors and their
whole paths.
Hmm, what am I doing wrong... strange...
That's what I found out today.
Besides I haven't typed as much as in the past three days, fine, I am
proud of my typing capabilities as they might evolve that way...
Best regards,

dTerm,
In 10+ years playing Empire, I have never used the 'path' command.
If I want to see the ideal path (path of min mob) as seen by the server,
I use the 'test' command. It displays the path and the total mob cost.
Route is useful for seeing where deliveries are set. I recommend only
using delivery for heavy commodities like iron and uws and then only
when you are fairly proficient - I do not recommend its use for novices.
Distribution is fairly straightforward and low maintenance. As long
as your distribution network is not too large and you do not try disting
lots of heavy things like uws or mils or vast quantities of things like
civs or iron, you set it up and forget about it. (Disting heavy things
depletes all mob in dist point and strands all commodities there. If you
have 61 mob in your dist point after the update, this is the problem.
Also, during the update, no more than 9999 of a commodity can be
in the dist sector even as an intermediate state so if you try this with
iron, iron over this quantity will still be in your mines after the update.)
One more thing - do not deplete the mob from the dist point moving
things with the 'move' command. distribution uses the mob present
BEFORE the update. ALWAYS keep at least 60 mob in your dist point!
Use 'distribute' to set up the dist point at a harbor or warehouse.
Use 'threshold' to set the quantity desired in a sector after the update.
Use 'level' to see a summary of the thresholds. Of course 'census'
and 'commodity' show summaries of existing items. From a text client,
you will want to set 'realms' such as #1, #2, etc. Then you can visualize
your country with command sequences like:
map #1
cen #1
comm #1
level #1
dist #1 0,0
thres i #1 ?des=m 1
thres i #1 ?des=j 600

hi again,
after just reading the bug-reports file in doc, I noticed, that my
posting isn't, well, formally correct and could be done better.
So tomorrow I will come up with a more detailed report about it.
Nevermind.
Good night,

hi again,
thanks Tom, for your hints, that's been exactly the things
I was just learning and struggeling with.
Now here are the problems I have so far:
1) When typing "route foo *", the client gives weird
output back, and sometimes even breaks the connection to
the server. I have attached screenshot3.jpg, showing how
it looks like then. Though I know, that this isn't the
proper use of the route command and therefor no bug; for
me it's still something, that should be intercepted by the
server.
2) When I run path to show me the distribution path of
some commdodity, it doesn't show the full path, as
described in the info file, but only the path for one or
two sectors.
screenshot1.jpg shows the output of path, together with
some output of commodity and level.
A simmilar thing occurs, when using route. It doesn't show
me the sectors, which distribute, only the one that
deliver. Unfortunately I haven't any screenshot of that,
sorry.
3) No distribution occurs, though, as of my knowledge, it
should. In screenshot3.jpg you can see the corresponding
output of commodity, census, and map.
What am I doing wrong??
Maybe there's some calculation problem with the mil
number, since budget often shows me different (too little)
numbers of mil than census does.
I still using the native empire client shiped with the
windows binaries release version 4.3.10 and currently log
in to the Changeling Blitz.
Maybe someone's got any idea, whats wrong, or at least,
what I am doing wrong!
I just notice, that the Google Groups web interface doesn't let me
attach anything to this posting, or I am too stupid to use it
properly. Anyway I will send them everyone by email, who wishes to
help me with these issues.
Greetings >> Stay informed about: weird outpot off route... |

Should be using route foo #0 or widen the terminal settings.
The map is too wide for the current terminal settings.

This is bug in the server, it is currently showing only every
second step of the path.

This appears that your thresholds are set to zero instead 1.
It it is zero, it will not move anything.

Hello Markus,
I am too stupid to attach the screenshots via Google Group's web
interface, so I can only send them by mail this time, but my question
are answered, so far.

Great! He already informed me...

Well then the route info page is not up-to-date any longer.
Ok, I can live with that.

I haven't checked it yet, but will do soon. I am going to join the
Zebra Blitz tomorrow, then we'll see, how things work.

Ok, I already wondered about this one. Anyway, now I know...

Ok, I already got one again. Please. don't get me wrong, nothing
personally.
But, are you guys here on USENET always so sober/hard-headed??
Or am I too gushing???
Anyway, thanks, I'll memorize the empire -2 bla.log thing, for the
future...
Good night!

Hello again,
There you already got it. The route info page made me thinking of
that, since in my version 4.3.10 info page it states, that route also
shows the sector, which distribute, additionally to the delivery
routes. Or am I mistaken???

Yeah, that's something I will also do most propably in the future.
When I am back to my SuSE Linux machine again, to be honest. But
thanks for the hints, I will most likely follow your advise.
That would be also more flexible, than depending on Zebra Blitz.
Unfortunately I am no hacker yet, but will become some sort of
qualified IT specialist soon. So then, maybe, I will get deeper into
the innards of the server code. That would be great to me...

Ohhh, now I feel very much relieved!! Well, I don't know the average
age here in RGE, but I believe I'm still very young, compared to you
all. Therefor I still maybe a little bit childish and gushy.
> You're welcome & have fun!
Fine, thank you, I love innocuous fun.
Besides, I still wanted to say, that I have been searching very long
to find such a cute, aesthetic game as Empire. I love ASCII output,
also rogulike RPGs for example. Minimalism's great!
I'm already quiet...
