something i've battled with for a while now is what to put on my
character as far as clothing, belts, gloves, rings, etc is concerned.
there are so many choices and combinations that it's difficult for me to
get them clear, even after writing it all down.
does anyone have some VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND recommendations on things
like armor bonuses, saving throws, saving throws universal, etc, and the
best combo of those things?

I've always gone with immunity gear.
IE the belts that give immunity to fear or death magic or both.
Save vs death becomes a total non issue.
Dragon slippers so you can't be knocked down.
Some kind of haste item (boots if i'm not worried about knockdown)
After that, anything that enhances the characters primary abilities.

I always favour Boots of Speed above any other boots - gives you permanent
haste.

Just to clarify, AC bonuses of the same kind DO NOT stack. That is
wearing an armor +2 and bracers of armor +2 will only give you AC+2
since both give "armor bonus to AC". But if you wear Ring (or Cloak) of
Protection with either of them then the AC bonus WILL stack, since the
ring gives "deflection bonus to AC". Again wearing an Amulet of Natural
Armor WILL stack since that gives "natural bonus" and so forth... I
think there are atleast Boots of Hardiness that has even another type of
AC bonus, "dodge bonus" which WILL stack with other AC bonus types.
So atleast four different types of AC bonuses.

Well, I didn't want to get too complex for someone just learning. But if
you want to get technical...
There are five types of magic AC bonuses:
1) Armor (armor and bracers): does not stack
2) Shield (shields): does not stack
3) Natural (amulets, Barkskin): does not stack
4) Deflection (rings, cloaks, weapons, helmets): does not stack
5) Dodge (boots, Haste, Dodge feat): does stack
So, if you have Haste on your weapon and +3 AC on your boots, you'll get
+7 Dodge bonus to AC. But if you have +3 AC amulet and drink a Potion of
Barkskin, nothing happens to your AC (you still get the tree-trunk look
on your character). "Standard" equipment would be +armor, +shield, +ring
or cloak, +boots or Boots of Speed, potion of Barkskin or +amulet.

Hotkeys are your friend. Hotkey the three belts of
not getting hurt and any other belt you might want.
I keep sets of clothes for certain tasks. A +charisma
suit for persuade. A +strength suit for hauling treasure.
Specific items for specific threats. Keep a mix.
I save every ring of invisibility I find. You can use each
once per day, and switch them out.

Not possible in the stock game. You could probably
script it.

Hmm, I never considered putting a bunch of clothes in my hotkeys. I
wonder, is it possible to use a single hotkey for a set of clothes?
That'd be cool, so you switch outfits with the press of a button! >> Stay informed about: question about what to wear |

You can't switch armor during combat, though.
For everything else, you can just switch stuff around, even during
combat (if you have it enabled, you can pause the game).
During conversations, when you see a Persuade, Bluff, etc. option
appear, you can switch gear without breaking the conversation to buff
your Charisma (though taking a potion will break the conversation).
