Hello all,
I'd like to solicit recommendations from the experienced wargamers
here. I am an avid strategy gamer and I've played all the major
strategy releases of the past several years -- Total War,
Civilization, Age of Empires, Heroes of Might & Magic, etc. But not a
wargame in a long time. The only wargame I've played is Gary
Grigsby's World At War. I am a military history buff though, and so
when I got "any game of my choice" as a Christmas present, I thought
I'd like to try a wargame.
My criteria is that I would like
1. Something with good flavor, that emphasizes fun rather than number
crunching.
2. Something that's manageable. I don't want hundreds of units to
keep track of. I'd like quick playing and low unit density. A game
with both large and small scenarios would be okay.
3. Not too tough. I want a challenge, but I want something that I
actually can beat as a beginner. A complex game that had a basic
level of difficulty or configurable settings to make it simpler while
learning would be okay.
The scale and time period aren't important. Whether it is squad level
WW2 or strategic level Ancients doesn't matter to me. I'm pretty much
interested in all areas of history.
Thanks for any ideas you may have. >> Stay informed about: I want a wargame |

Hi,
Here are a couple of recommendations :
- Operational WW2, turn based : SSG's Battles In Normandy or SSG's
Battlefront. The former has more introductory scenarios, same
principles for both but not same game. Battlefront being a tad more
complicated in the supply rules.
- Operational WW2, real time (as I see you might not be allergic to
it) : SSG's (again) Carriers At War, Panther Games' Conquest Of the
Aegean/Highway To the Reich. In the latter, you can have hundreds of
units at your disposal, but thanks to the implementation of the chain
of command, you control only a handful of them. Both games have
varied scenarios.
- Ancients, turn based : I like Tin Soldiers : Julius Caesar. Battles
are limited in size, but can be tough nonetheless.
All are published by Matrix Games. Gents, don't jump to
conclusions.
Cheers,
JeF. >> Stay informed about: I want a wargame |

The poster was interested is a *wargame*, not in Total War: Tanks (ie
Theatre of War).
Interestingly enough both CEAW and ToW are programmed in Java. CEAW is
*very* stable and only has a slight delay during the startup of the
main program. No problems during the game itself.
How's the performance and stabilty of ToW these these? Still a lot of
bluescreening and sluggish behaviour on average systems?
Makes me wonder who the amateur programmers are...but ToW stills sure
are pretty!

Hey, thanks for joining our community. Given you haven't played many
wargames and the requirements above, I'd have to recommend the
following as good intros:
Commander: Europe at War
Advanced Tactics
Tin Soldiers: Julius Caesar
Also, if you already played Gary Grigsby's World At War you may want
to try the sequel, A World Divided - easy to play if you already know
World at War but with a bunch of nice improvements.
If you start with those and like them, then it should be easy to work
your way up into the more complex wargames.
Regards,

Advanced Tactics (MAtrix): easy to learn, hard to master; small and
medium sized scenario's; generic in the sense it has both WWII,
fictional and ACW scenario's + a random map/scenario feature that'll
keep you playing.
Punic Wars (HPS): fairly easy, not too many units, Roman warfare;

Birth of America by AGEOD. Two situations: The French-Indian Wars and the
American Revolution, each one with both full campaigns and small scenarios.
The map (from Canada to Florida) is divided in areas, and the units
represents anything from various regiments, to native americans, to
squadrons and flotillas of ships. The simulation is detailed but the system
is *very* intuitive (you can grasp the basics in half-an-hour) and the low
unit density makes even the biggest scenarios (like the whole American
Revolution at one-month turns) playable and manageable. The graphics are
very nice too.
If you find you like it, AGEOD followed up with "The American Civil War" and
"Napoleon Campaigns", both based on the same system.

Strongly second BIRTH OF AMERICA. Small, intimate scenarios with tens-
of-units rather than hundreds-of-units. Easy, fluid interface that
doesn't get in the way. Excellent AI performance. Tremendous blending
of classic boardgaming elements and computing power.

Don't listen to others here, they are paid Matrix spies
I recommend Theatre of War
http://www.battlefront.com/products/tow/index.html
I've seen that you like Total War games so you will like Theatre of War.
Other suggestions are also OK - Advanced Tactics is OK, Europa Universalis 3
is OK for history lovers etc... Avoid Commander: Europe at War as it is
programmed by someone who just learned what is BASIC.

Apart from the valuable suggestions you've already received you should
also know that a lot of wargames have demos so you can try before you
buy.
One game which fits your criteria is Gary Grigsby's World at War - and
it has a demo.

Re-read the OP Eddy : Patrick already played it...
Now this makes me think to another contender : Strategic Command.
Either release 1 (highly recommended) or 2. They also have a demo.

Dang - in my defence : I'm multi-tasking : typing here while testing
the latest COTA patch and as my wife never fails to point out - and
she purposely looks at me while saying this : Men are pretty bad at
multi-tasking

And why not go the 3D tactical route ? : both Combat Mission and
