looking at some of the nice videos you guys are doing, I've been
looking into what it takes. I have some questions on how
best to do the recording. I have FSRecorder set up to do the flying,
now I need to work on the capture setup.
I've been playing with a demo version of payware hypercam2 and freeware
Cam Studio 2.5. I've also tried easy Video Capture but seemed to have
more trouble with that.
For any of these, I need to know how best to set:
Capture region size
record frame rate
key frame rate
video codec
compression
I saw a suggestion that key frame rate be set to 5. I've been
looking at a couple codecs I have installed. HyperCam I got
to work with Xvid MPEG-4, but couldn't get DivX 6.6.1 to run.
I set compression to 75. In Cam studio I couldn't get Xvid to
work, but got Microsoft video 1 to work. I also have something
called cinepak and ffdshow installed but haven't tried these.
Anything else I should be looking at? Cam Studio also has the
ability to save in swf format, but I guess saving as avi is OK
and then convert to streaming later?

Scott,
I agree with Mike on using FRAPS. If you saw my PMDG 747-400X videos
recently posted they were all done using FRAPS.
I just have the trial version which leaves the watermark though this
can be cropped off on your final render. The quality of the video can
be captured at either full screen (same as resolution) or half screen
and with/without sound recorded too. FPS can be set to a
predetermined value or manual. It records in RAW avi so not to lose
performance compressing the file during capture. The 30 second
capture can be a bit of a pain keeping the video in sync and in my
case took a lot of pausing of the sim and reflying parts of the
takeoff and approach for various views etc. It also keeps your shots
to a short timeframe as I see so many FS videos on YouTube with long
boring shots and the viewer just loses interest.
You will require a large hard drive and I would advise allowing the
FRAPS to store the captured avi files on a secondary hard disk (not
your FS drive). I have mine saving onto a 320GB 7200rpm (16mb cache)
IDE drive and not my main RAID0 array. This means that separate hard
disk controllers are operating which helps with performance.
The final RAW files can be inserted into a video editing suite,
arranged, trimmed and transitions inserted along with a soundtrack if
you wish. I exported mine to AVI format using the MPEG4 CODEC and a
resolution of 720x480 (DVD) and the Audio was MP3. The length of the
final video is 12:46 and the file is 146mb in size

Hi scott s,
Most of the guys, including myself, on this NG use FRAPS to capture
video. Just Google FRAPS and you can download a trial version. The trial
version leaves the FRAPS logo on your videos, but if you like it, and
purchase it, then that no longer applies. Also the trial version, so I
believe, only lets you capture in 30 second segments.

Thanks guys,
so it sounds like the consensus is to record a full screen and then
rescale to something more reasonable later. I've also been playing
some with Virtual Dub which has a capture function, though it seems
best for processing video rather than capturing it.

For better quality keep FS in full screen rather than windowed mode
combined with some form of capture region.
If using windowed mode your capture may well look pixelated due to AA
and AF filters not being used by the graphics card.
Its all trial and error and perhaps other capture programs may perform
better on your system. On older pcs I have had FRAPS has generated a
terrible performance hit once I press the record button. But
fortunately on my current build it only drops a few fps

No afraid not. I'm not sure how FRAPS would handle the multiple
screens. I know it goes a little crazy in windowed mode.
