I have an Asus A7n8x mobo with a Athlon XP 3000. I am going to
replace the ATI Radeon 9600/256 with a better card for Flight Sim.
Hopefully something fast enough for the new version of Flt Sim , too.
This mobo of course has the older AGP support only. Nvidia 7800 would
be nice, but I think it is only available for PCI express. Don't want
to spend over abt $350 for new video card. thanks!

As Allan said a GeForce 7800GS AGP 256Mb would be a good upgrade,
works very well on my "getting-old" P4 AGP system for FS9... Should be
able to cope with FSX until DX10 hardware finally show up for a real
complete system upgrade next year Wink

Yea, that looks like the one to get! I don't think my case power
supply is full 400 watts/20+ amps, probably will have to upgrade that.
Also there is another requirement for an "available hard disk drive
power dongle" I guess "dongle" is same as a HDD power connector? Never
heard of having to connect a video card up to a HDD connector as well!

Ebay has a bunch of these listed...made by BFG... in the $280 price
range. thanks!

I've heard that the GeForce 7800 GS might be your best alternative. Looking
at it myself as a poor-man's upgrade for FSX. I currently have an ASUS N6200
(nVidia/GeForce technology), which is quite good for the time being, and an
excellent gaming card.( I used to be a big ATI fan).

Hi geronimo,

I guess they mean the graphics card needs a power lead plugged in from
the power supply.

My ATI X850 XT needs that...

Hi Guys

I am running a 2 year old P4 3Gig with 1 Gig Ram and a GeForce 6600 256MB.

I have just found a Gainward GeForce 7800GS "BLISS" 512MB DDR3 AGP 2xDVI
HDTV but with the price tag of £240!!!

Would I see a great difference in Frame rate and enough to warrant this much
money on an upgrade card?

Thanks for any advice!

I tend to use SCAN, very good, used them for years and no problems, but they
want £276 for same card. Where did you find yours?

I would be interested as well Smile

Also, is a 512mb card that much better than a 256mb card. Only ask, because my
son is using a 256mb 6200 and I have tried that in my machine and found FPS
improvements were marginal - i.e. On very heavy load, comparison with an ASUS
128mb 4200, FPS improvement was between 10-20% - this was also compating AGP4 v
AGP8 !! Basically, my old ASUS card is still holding it's own Smile

Please tell me where, cheapest I can find is £276 at SCAN.

Did you price include VAT?

I have the overclocked version of GF 7800GS 256mb graphics card. Got it
three months ago for £200. Runs with 16 pipelines and considered one of
the quickest AGPx8 cards around. It got good reviews a few months ago on
Toms Hardware Guide with an article 'AGP not dead'. With a AMD64 3000+ cpu
it copes pretty well with a lot of sliders nearly fully right but can still
slow down at busy airports. Depends on what you are flying and if detailed
airports. Works great on other 3D games which rely on graphics over cpu with
good fps on Doom3 and Quake 4. I think if I had a quicker cpu I would see
more potential as its limiting my system.

Dabs are doing that card at £246.75 inc VAT, but they say stocks are low.
You could also try Ebay as well.

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4154

Check your post code in the delivery charges section, because I live in N
Scotland I would have a surcharge of £11.75, and I guess that's why I don't
use Dabs anymore these days.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys, the card I mentioned I found at dabs.com

I also read the review for this card at Toms Hardware and it says it is
probably the best AGP card around.

Think I will give it a whirl Smile

Thanks again

Try and go for the CO version which is overclocked. Think core speed is
430mhz and memory speed 1300 rather than the standard version which may be
375 and 1200 or if you have the money the superclocked version runs at 490
and 1400mhz. Mine is the EVGA brand

Had a look at DABS and this is where it gets interesting, as it looks the same
card as the SCAN one, but is not from what I can gather.

According to DABS:

Model 7800GS SILENT AGP TV-DVI
Product Line Gainward BLISS
Video Memory Installed Size 512 MB
Memory Clock Speed 600 MHz
Technology GDDR3 SDRAM
Video Output Core Clock Speed 425 MHz

SCAN's model however:
512Mb Gainward BLISS 7800GS+ Silent 512MB TV DVI *
N.B. 7900GT GPU on a 7800GS AGP Card !!!

GPU Speed: 450 MHz
Memory: 512Mb
Memory Bit Rate: 256 Bit
Memory Type: GDDR3
Memory Speed: 1250 MHz
Number of Pipelines: 24

Which to me looks a lot better for it's money. Mind you still twitchy about
paying nearly £300 for a GF. So I might just watch the prices on this one for
a while, it if comes down to £200 in the next few months, it might be OK until
I need my HW refresh Smile
