vectrex repair - I have a vectrex unit that I've had since I was a kid. The display shows dots with broken lines on minestorm and any inserted I've tried to resolder the 4 pin connector as mentioned by on this site, no luck. I'm amazed by the depth..
Looking for broken Vectrex - I'm looking to buy a broken Vectrex - one that's broken, but has an intact case. Does anyone have one or know of one? Thanks, Bob Alexander

Hi I have recently had the urge to jump into the vectrexs emulators and
also at buying an actual unit.
So, first of all, what is the best way to emulate the vectrex on winxp with
overlays. I have dabbled with MESS but overlays don't seem to work and I
have been unable to get DVE to work (either via dosbox or just in a cmd
window)
Secondly, is there a better/cheaper way to get into actual vectrex hardware
than ebay?
Third (and last for now) is there any one that is making/selling just the
overlays?

1) have you tried ParaJVE? - in my opinion its the best emulators out
there, and it does overlays. Take a look at http://vectrex-emu.blogspot.com/
2) not sure, I've bought all my Vectrex consoles from ebay. In UK you
are unlikely to see such consoles in 2nd hand shops, since they have a
policy of not selling electrical equipment. Might be different for
your country if you are from abroad.
3) there used to be a guy, but he stopped doing it - there is a
website somewhere telling how to make them yourself.

There's several things which don't work properly in MESS, overlays being the
least of it's problems.
And you can forget DVE unless you're running MS-Dos or Win95. It doesn't
work under any NT based OS, IE Win2000/XP or later. I believe it even has
some problems with Win98/ME.  Then again, it is specifically a "D"os
"V"ectrex "E"mulator....
As someone else said, ParaJVE is supposed to be good, but I haven't gotten
around to trying it out myself yet (I've been putting up with MESS'
problems).

Hmmm, eBay isn't quite as overpriced for this sort of stuff these days as it
used to be.
You might try looking in the small ads in your local newspaper etc, or
asking in newsgroups like this one? Alternatively, I picked up all three of
my units from amateur radio rallies (hamfests) which, here in the UK at
least, used to be a virtual goldmine for collectors of classic
videogame/computer equipment.
The last place I'd look would be a specialist retro-games shop. Here in the
UK we have a chain of shops called "GameStation", some of which sell retro
games and consoles. The prices they charge for "classic" stuff is just plain
crazy....and makes eBay prices look positively bargain basement (try almost
£200 ($400) for a Vectrex!!!!!).

I bought a 2nd Vectrex from Gamestation in April 2007 for about 70
quid... it was boxed, with 10 boxed games and an extra boxed
controller!
I'd just wait for one on eBay being sold 'locally' so you can pick it
up... postage is expensive and I doubt they travel too well!
That said I don't find the eBay price taht high anyway, I think the
price stays 'low' due to the postage cost/issues.

Wow!!! The main one here in Birmingham (which claims to be the biggest video
games store in Europe BTW) wanted a mere £179 for a boxed one with NO games
or other extras last time I spotted one in there.
Hence the reason I avoid the place nowadays (been at least 12 months since I
set foot in there). I go in the smaller one pretty much every time I'm in
town, but they're pretty much software only and unfortunately they're fast
phasing out the software for vintage consoles from that branch.
Other examples I observed, £79 for an Atari 7800 (and the box was quite
battered), £59 for a loose "woody" 2600, £110 for a loose ColecoVision, etc
etc
<cough>rip-off!</cough>
They USED to be a really good place to get bargains, about 12 years ago I
picked up my NeoGeo CD with 8 games from there for a mere £110. Those dys
are long gone....

Agreed, I'd be loath to trust anything containing a CRT to the tender
mercies of the post office....

Quite, the days of Vectrii reaching astronomical prices on eBay are over by
the look of things.
