Most flying I do in FS9 is just around my home state of Queensland Au.
There's a big bad world out there that I haven't ventured into yet.
So I'm looking for some ideas of your favourite places to fly.
What's the most beautiful place you've flown - what's the most boring??

Hi Bruce,
There is a large high-mountain lake in the state that I live in, that I
love to fly in and out of in the Grumman Goose, or any amphibian that is
powerful enough to handle a takeoff at 6500 feet MSL. The name of the lake
is Redfish Lake, and the co-ordinates for it are: N44 8.60 W114 55.15. I
have saved a flight there for June 6th, at 06:53am Local time - right after
sunrise. This lake is nestled in the rugged Sawtooth mountain range in
central Idaho, USA. I have visited this lake many, many times in real life,
it is one of my favorite places in the entire world. I was overjoyed to
find that FSX actually does a pretty good job of capturing the incredible
beauty of this lake. If you don't like to fly amphibians, then there is an
unpaved airstrip about 5 miles north of the lake that will handler about
anything except the big commercial jets. The airstrip is called Stanley
(2U7) and it really is designed for small back-country aircraft. The Maule
would be perfect.
If you like a challenge, take off from the north end of this lake, and
fly south into the high peaks. Or just try taking off to the south, and fly
around the lake without flying into the terrain. I think you will like this
spot. It looks incredible in the early morning. Take care...

If you want to venture into Canada, try a flight from Edmonton,
Alberta (CYEG) to Vancouver, British Columbia (CYVR). It's about 450
miles of pure scenic gorgeousness (another long word).
I broke free of Canada last year and flew the perimeter of South
America using the CRJ-700. I also did a similar trip in the Lear 45
because some of the runways are short. There's nothing stopping you
from changing planes in mid-trip. I landed at a major airport and
then switched to a Cessna 172 for a flight inland......low and slow.
Lotsa fun.
The most boring flight I have had is over the rain forest in Brazil.
Trillions of square miles of what looked like a soggy salad. Also,
flying over the Outback in Oz was no thrill, as well as the midwest
U.S.A. and central Canada......ho hum. The thrill comes in when the
Rocky Mountains come into sight at FL400....unbeatable!

I find myself often visiting Innsbruck Austria, and anywhere within the
alpine region keeps my interest in FSX alive. In general, anywhere with
decent terrain is good, but flatlands, desserts etc can bore me silly.

I always return to the Western US, Western Canada, and Alaska. Salt
Lake City is a favorite departure/arrival airport. Juneau, Alaska to
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory is a good one. In FS9 I have Ultimate
Terrain- USA/Canada which helps greatly. In California I fly from
Palm Springs to Death Valley and north along the Eastern Sierra Nevada
to Lake Tahoe. That is my favorite flight. The most boring to me is
any flat terrain and oceans. >> Stay informed about: I've Just Decided ..... |

Areas in N. America tended to get better detail in the sim. I highly
recommend a low and slow flight from Shelter Cove (0Q5) to Benton (O85) in
California.
It's got it all... Pacific Coast, Western Mountains, and the Central
Valley.

It does seem like California is a popular place to fly.
If you're into man-made scenery, I like to fly KLAX to KLAS. You can
see Los Angeles and even catch the Hollywood sign if you know where to
look. Las Vegas' scenery is pretty good too. They did a good job on
the Las Vegas strip, although with the amount of construction that goes
on there, it's never quite up to date.
I also like to fly from KLAX to KSFO along the coast. I'd love to
actually do this in a small plane sometime. I've done it several times
by car and I never get tired of it.

Hey I do envy the area you have to fly around in real life. Here's an
example of the "wonderful" scenery in my part of the world:

It takes a couple of hours to fly into to any thing that looks different.

Yo Bruce,
Go here and paste theses designators into this website for a fast moving
sectional view of the area. In fact if you drop 0Q5 O85 into the box it
will draw the flight plan on the sectional.

Hi Bruce, try a series of flights down the east and south coast of
Australia. I did it in FSX a while back, doing hops of about an hour
in the default C172, using some free scenery add-ons from
FlightSim.com, and also modifying some airports, using FSX SDK's
Object Placement Tool.
I also enjoy North America, UK, and Europe, flying the C172 in hops of
about an hour.

Assuming you've found VOZ there's the rest of Australia! That's big enough
to keep you quiet for a while. I'm about to embark on a silly little venture
to visit every airfield in NSW.
A while ago I was a bit stale with FS too. I found my interest was
re-ignited by doing a round the world trip (in the stock King Air of all
things). You can search out and install scenery for places along the way if
you wish but it's fun just to plot and fly the route, especially if you're
in an aircraft with a shortish range. As part of this exercise I discovered
some great scenery for Hawaii and Hong Kong, visited Death Valley and the
Beechcraft factory in the US, saw the Himalayas and the Alps and had lots of
fun trying to get around Iran and Iraq without being shot down <VBG>. I'd
often land at a place and then jump in a helicopter or something like the
Piper Cub to go and have a look around the scenery. Even the out of the box
stuff in some places is pretty good. Which reminds me, I wonder if they've
scraped my hired Robinson off the Acropolis yet.
I'm doing it again the other way round (flying eastwards) but am currently
stuck in Hong Kong as FS crashes on me each time I approach my next
destination but that's a whine for another day.
I think that's the thing though - set a goal. Sure, you can slew to and fly
around Hawaii but it's much more satisfying to do it the real world way.
Having to work out how to fly there from Brisbane is challenging in itself
when there's the small puddle of Pacific Ocean in the way. You have to get
into fuel management of your aircraft and how to load extra, all of which
satifies the aviation 'bug', find the tiny islands to stage through and then
there's what to do when you get there. Have a virtual holiday with Google
and then see if you can find the sights in the scenery
HTH, Paul
Just had a thought, what with the Olympics and all maybe I could tootle up
to Beijing and have a look around there.

Most boring is desserts, like Sahara and Gobi, not much to see there, trans
oceanic flights can be a bit of a bore to.
Places I find interesting, are places with something to look at, so that
would be places with loads of landmarks, like NYC, SF, and Chicago For the
US area. Most of South America is forest, or plains, with a few "hill tops"
on the West coast.
Even if waterways can be boring, you might sometimes find small gems hidden
there, like oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico, just South of Louisiana and
Texas.
In Europe there are a few big cities with well known landmarks represented,
that's Paris, Rome, Amsterdam and London. In Africa only the pyramids at the
Giza plateau in Egypt are shown, and in Asia Hong Kong and Tokyo are worth
seeing. In the Middle East it's only Jerusalem, which have a landmark, the
Temple Mount.
For the rest of the World, it's mostly autogen and standard airports, and a
few mountains, but IMO, flying the Alps or the Rockys, makes no big
difference, except for the location of landing spots. Himalaya is a bit
different, for mountain flying, because it's at a higher altitude, than the
other ranges.
If you go to Australia, there is Sidney and Ayers rock, the rest is quite
boring.
That said, you can add to the fun, by downloading sceneries for a lot of
locations, most freeware sceneries are quite good, and makes those areas
worth a low'n'slow flight. If the area is unknown to you, start by visiting
the place in Google Earth, to get some background and info on what to
expect, since most buildings are the same, until you know what they are, and
why they are there.
Along with the sceneries, make sure to have the airports of the area loaded,
since standard MSFS ones are soooo alike each other.
BTW. Your first clue to what cities are worth visiting, go to your scenery
library, an look for the word "Photoreal".
