Hi all,
Just in case anyone was wondering, I've still not managed to get UT2004
running consistantly on my PC. Rather than simply not starting at all, the
game will now start occasionally, and I can go and attempt to join a server.
9 times out of 10, I don't get past the 'splash' screen that shows you what
the map is etc.
I restarted the game once, and then unchecked 'fullscreen' in the video
settings. I made sure I shut down the game cleanly from the main menu.
I then restarted the game, and it duly popped up in a small window. I fired
up task manager and it said 100% CPU, and stayed there. The game didn't get
past the Epic games logo. I've got a feeling that task manager will always
show 100% CPU when a game is running, so that's not much to go on ?
For kicks, I threw in *UT2003*. Worked like a charm time and again.
So, still none the wiser about the problem, but I'm going to be a traitor
and get stuck into Quake 4 this week. I've run the demo just fine so fingers
crossed.
I *know* I've played UT2004 on my current GFX card in the past, and it was
fine. Maybe it's developed an intermittent prob, or the latest NVIDIA
drivers aren't agreeing 100% with my card. I've run out of ideas now.
I thought I'd just post this to make a change from 'Big Tits' spam. Must get
out more.
Happy fraggin'

Yes. A couple of times at least. It feels like much more. But I'm sure it's
a couple of times, maybe three complete reinstalls.
Without any patches/bonus packs whatsoever, on a fresh install of UT2004,
the Epic games logo will start, and then freeze. Sometimes it doesn't get
that far. I reboot, go into UT2004 safe mode, which always works, then come
out of that and restart the game. It works, then when I go to join an
Internet game, I can't get past the 'splash' screen now.
Not tried Instant Action yet, as I'm just so used to going straight to an
online server. I'm about to now though.

It's sounding more and more like the problem I had. It's something with the
engine and it's rendering of the advanced textures. You might try another
Unreal2 engine game, maybe try to run an America's Army demo or something
like that, but I would guess you are not going to get anywhere. I had to do
a re-install of my whole OS to fix this and after asking around I found I
was not alone. There are some old posts on the Atari forums about this
problem but the thing was it's not constantly reproduceable. It just
"happens".
Sorry if that's your problem mate. Look at it as it's as good a time as any
to reimage.

Also (and I know it's bad form to reply to yourself) I made sure to totally
remove EVERYTHING UT2004 related, even the registry keys. It didn't help so
I'm wondering if it's not something altered in the DirectX packages when you
install? >> Stay informed about: [ut2004] Still no joy |

That's bizarre. I figure goPostal is on the right track with it being
a D3D issue. Have you tried changing the renderer to OGL? (sorry if
you've already mentioned that) >> Stay informed about: [ut2004] Still no joy |

I too have seen a few posts around the Net sounding remarkably similar to my
own. One post (which I think is on unrealadmin.org, sorry, no link) didn't
have a response. That post was from a couple of years ago now I'm sure.
Personally, I think you're right, and that I'm basically knackered.
Well, on a different note, I got my Quake 4 today and threw that in, patched
it, and had a blast. The only downside of that experience was me finding out
that my trusty PC isn't all that with these new games. I can play it sure,
but at 640*whatever with just about nothing interesting selected. I tried
'holy-shitting' it just for grins and got very predictable results i.e.
almost unplayable.
What do you guys have in your PCs now ? Dual-core wotsits ? A card better
than mine (Nvidia 7600GS) ? If so, can you post your specs as I think I will
be in the market for another PC soon whether I can afford it or not.

I run a dual core HP with a 7900GS. It's not an expensive rig by any means
but with 2 gigs of RAM it will play anything out now. If I had it to do over
again I'd have sprung for the 8800GTS. It's just so much more powerful. The
7900GS is a good candidate for best card for the dollar right now though.
If you play games at all it's best to invest a little money into your habit.
It's much less frustrating when you can really enjoy the game and not be
worrying over what you are missing. >> Stay informed about: [ut2004] Still no joy |

Nice system. Sounds like something I'd like to get. I understand what you
mean, pay a bit more now, and reap the rewards later.
