Hello all,

First, before I forget, the details :

Windows XP Prof Service Pack 2
DirectX 9.0c
1.75 GB RAM
Nvidia 7600GS GFX
92.24 forceware drivers from nvidia.com
(Also tried the drivers on the CD-ROM that came with the gfx card, Device
Manager says the driver version there is '9.3.9.1' 01/06/2006. Same results
as detailed below. I uninstalled the previous drivers first.)

Game installed ok, with patch 3369. Upon clicking the shortcut to the game,
lots of disk activity, the screen goes black, and instead of the Epic games
intro, there's nothing. I can just see the screen change to a dark grey
(from black) after a few seconds, and that's it. Nothing else happens. I
can't ctl-alt-del at all, and have to soft-reset the box.

Same set up as above, but with the addition of the ECE Bonus Pack. Same
results, game looks like it's starting ok, but I just get a blank screen.

I've had a look on unrealadmin.org in the Windows-specific forum, but didn't
see anything related.

The embarrassing thing is, I've run UT2004 on this box before, with no
problems. Same card, everything. I have had Service Pack 2 in and out a few
times due to it seemingly interfering with some DivX programs I use. Could
that be it ?

I'm at a loss really so if anyone knows how to fix this, I'd be most
grateful. Thanks for your time all.

Regards,

Nrth.

Did you try DXDiag to check your DX integrity?

Hi. I didn't try that. I just have though and everything seems to be in
order, all the tests worked and there was a 'No problems found' report on
the bottom of each section, with the odd mention of the drivers not being
WHQL-tested. I've seen this before though and it hasn't been a problem.

I did a bit more searching and found this thread on the Atari forums, even
though it's from some time ago :

http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=528356

I guess I could try some older drivers as the poster suggested, but I know
I've had it working here before, with up-to-date drivers. :/

Ah yes. I ran the game in 'safe mode' and it started even though it looked
horrible (to be expected though). Not sure what to make of that though.

Thanks for the response anyway.

Regards,

Nrth.

You might try a reinstall of the UT game itself, but I'd bet that's not it.
I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but I had a problem last year
quite similar to yours where the unreal engine would crash my computer just
like yours. I threw a LOT of time at trying to fix it, doing every damn
thing I could find to fix it. Never did get it to work (sorry dude). I ended
up reinstalling my OS and that fixed it.
Now, I'm no computer god but I know a fair bit about fixing problems and I'm
not afraid to ask for help. When I say that this problem really perplexed
me, I mean it totally got me. I even tried swapping GPU cards to get it to
run.
I'm not saying that your problem is as bad as mine was, but I wonder if you
have trouble with any other Unreal 2.0 engine games? Have you tried
America's Army or Harry Potter series? You might get a demo of one and try
to see if it will run. If it won't you might be stuck. If they will, try a
dump of both User.ini and UT2004.ini in your /2004/system folder. Your game
will regenerate new ones when you start it again and you will have to rename
your character and reset your video stuff if that works. If it won't you
might do a full cleaning then reinstall.

Thanks very much for the tips. I'm sure I've had a demo of Doom running a
few months ago, but that's a different engine I know. I'll try a few demo
games based on Unreal 2 like you said.

Well at least I'm not the only one to have problems like this. If I have to
bite the bullet and do a clean reinstall, then that's what I'll do. If it
works, I'll report back here on what happened.

Thanks again.

You ought to try to hit a few high spots before you reimage your whole
drive. Funny thing though was that D3 worked fine for me at that time too
because I got my FPS fix on it while my UT was down. Smile
Good luck and drop by anytime!

It might be a conflict with DEP (Data Execution Prevention). You
could try turning it off for UT only, or turning it off altogether.

Control Panel/System/Advanced tab/ click on Settings under Performance
and then click on the Data Execution Prevention tab.

Good suggestion. Sadly, no joy.

This is on a completely fresh install of XP + UT2004. Service Pack 2
and all updates. Latest Nvidia driver etc.

I did try the game without service pack 2 (although all 'hotfixes' etc
were still present), and the results were exactly the same.

I *have* just had a good blast on Quake 3 Team Arena though .. Smile

Before I bit the bullet and fresh installed everything, I decided to
add a switch to the program path of the UT2004 desktop shortcut. I
wasn't sure if it was the right one, but it did produce a log. I added
'-log=pants.log' (minus quotes, name of log for quick location) in the
UT2004 shortcut, as all other logs appear to be empty in the
UT2004/System directory.

Here's what I found in my pants.log :

Log: Log file open, 06/11/07 15:31:00
Init: Name subsystem initialized
Init: Detected: Microsoft Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
Init: Version: 3369 (128.29)
Init: Compiled: Dec 14 2005 11:06:37
Init: Command line: -log=pants.log
Init: Character set: Unicode
Init: Base directory: G:\UT2004\System\
Init: Ini:UT2004.ini UserIni:User.ini
Init: Build label: UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22]
Init: Object subsystem initialized

Nothing else happened, just what was written there.

I don't know what else to look for now. Just a damned mystery to me.

Regards,

Nrth.

According to my log, it looks like the next step would be to
initialize the display driver.

Have your tried 'UT2004 Safe Mode'?

BTW, I doubt this has anything to do with your problem, but it's a bit
odd and this newsgroup needs some posts. <g>

Here's the same few lines of my log file:

Log: Log file open, 06/11/07 21:21:00
Init: Name subsystem initialized
Init: Detected: Microsoft Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
Init: Version: 3369 (128.29)
Init: Compiled: Nov 23 2005 16:23:34
Init: Command line:
Init: Character set: Unicode
Init: Base directory: E:\UT2004\System\
Init: Ini:UT2004.ini UserIni:User.ini
Init: Build label: UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22]

Where your log file says:
Init: Compiled: Dec 14 2005 11:06:37

mine says:
Init: Compiled: Nov 23 2005 16:23:34

And since the following line for both logs say:
Init: Build label: UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22]

then mine would appear to be more correct, since both dates are
11/23/05. But then my copy is one of the originals, so maybe they
changed something in a later release.

Well spotted. To answer your question in a previous post, yes, I tried
running the game in safe mode, and it worked.

One thing I haven't tried yet is to use an older patch. I am using 3369, so
I'll try the one before that just for grins. I'll then try turning my
t-shirt inside out to see if that helps.

Wink

T-shirt, no. Underwear... possibly.

Could you post your log from safe mode? Maybe there's a clue.

Right. I reinstalled patch 3369 as the *server* crash fix messed with my
mutator settings. I'll read the file info next time. Smile

Just played online, on my own, but playing. Excellent !

Thanks to Folk and go_postal for throwing in the ideas to try and for the
moral support.

I can't believe it. o_O

I actually changed underwear and it's working !!! Smile

I had deleted the desktop shortcut, all but admitting defeat, deciding that
'out of sight, out of mind' was the best option for now. After reading your
post about the safe mode log, I thought 'ok yeah', and used the shortcut in
the program menu instead.

As I did before, I added in a switch : '-log=safe.log' to the shortcut
parameters, and clicked it. Not sure whether I needed to add that or not but
I did.

UT2004 started up, and this time, informed me that *last time* I had shut
down the game uncleanly, and would I like to start in troubleshooting mode.

*This is the first time I have seen this warning/info message.*

Such was my surprise, that I'm positive I just clicked 'Play Unreal
Tournament 2004', instead of the reference to troubleshooting, by mistake.

The game just started. Hmm.

Earlier on this afternoon, I did install the 'crash fix' from
unrealadmin.org, but the game still did *not* start after applying this
patch. I've got an idea that the crash this fix is referring to is for
something else entirely anyway, but I thought 'what the hell, yeehar, in ya
go'.

I can't think of anything else that's changed today. One security update
from Microsoft, that thankfully didn't need a reboot for once, and that's it
I'm sure.

Ok, the log output from my antics this pm :

I've just started it again, no safe mode, no problem. The program menu
shortcut seems to work, but everytime I had clicked on the *desktop*
shortcut (now deleted), nothing happened.

I thought they were the same thing ?
