Well... It has been a while since I had a UT (UT99) server up. My current
bandwidth situation seems alright for a server... but I have to host my
redirects on the same machine. I have a megabit up stream, and the server
is on a P4 2.6 w/ a Gb of memory, so it aught to be alright, I suppose. It
would be a little less worrisome if I had a second machine and as much up
stream as down (15 meg down has been a real treat, but a meg up is far less
than I used to have available).

Anyway, I'm not real fond of punching a hole in port 80 in my firewall. I
can't remember if I can direct my redirects to a specific port. Apache is
perfectly happy listening on any port I want, but I don't remember if UT
handles that properly or not. I know it has to be an http address to
redirect to, but can I specify a port?

And, on that note, I can't remember if my UZ folder has all of my old
compressed files or not, but I tossed it on the web server and I'll hope for
the best. I would appreciate anyone at all connecting to the UT server and
responding on the redirect speed and for that matter if the redirects are
actually operational or not. Somewhere in the DM list, you should be able
to find "Trainwreck Matrix DM - Relics Spell Unreal". Or just connect to
the IP in my message headers.

Thanks!

Hey sixdarts,

Considering you're not redirecting to another machine the downloads are not
too bad at all. I've most certainly been sat waiting for much slower ones
in the past. Everything that I needed to connect downloaded OK but as I'm
all the way over here and you're all the way over there my ping was
atrocious and it was unplayable for me even just against the bots.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I can adjust the tick rate a bit, but sadly, I
can't move closer to a greater number of players. That has always been the
biggest challenge for me running servers in my area. There aren't too many
priority fibre pipes running through the mountains of Montana <g>. Even
when I had T3 (15 meg or so asynchronous) speeds, anyone further East than
Missouri or further South than Arizona or really as far West as Oregon
always suffered high pings.

There is a spot in my State where it is a lot better. A little town called
Laurel, Montana has more fibre under it than any other individual spot in
the entire US. Level3, Qwest, AT&T, and some of the US Govt owned fibre
converge there. Sadly, Bresnan (my ISP) pipes out of our State by a
different route on a lonely AT&T pipe that isn't part of the major backbones
that converge in Laurel.

Anyway, thanks again. A few of my old friends and I still like to play a
little DM and chat on occasion. Knowing they can connect and the redirects
should work before I tell everyone the server is up was important.

Cheers!

It worked for me, however my ping was around 175. I'm on the east coast
in the states, and my ping is never better than somewhere around 75.
