Post subject: Any updates to the Berserker class?
Archived from groups: alt>games>everquest (more info?)

Looking thru the FAQ I see the following workup on the 'Zerker. I wrote
this myself, its been a long time since I played a berserker though, and
probably 7+ months since I played EQ at all. I think I topped out at 56
or so, so I really wasn't an expert at the class even when 65 was the
top end of the game.

Look thru there, there's lots of "currently" and "unfinished" to them; I
was wondering if A) SOE ever "finished" the class up or B) if I was
wrong, writing from a limited viewpoint, and there was really more to
the high end 'Zerker than was apparant to me at the time

========================================================================

Berserker

Traditional duty: melee damage. Other roles: snarer, caster interrupt,
ghetto slows, backup tank. A decent solo class, berserkers have
moderately good DPS, and get enough HP, AC, and avoidance to be a good
off-tank. They can serve as primary tank against mobs that are
stunnable. Their value on a raid is currently minimal, where they are
mostly just DPS and there are classes that out-DPS them.

Berserkers have no mana bar to worry about, but instead fuel their
abilities by using up "basic axe components", which are cheaply
available from their vendors. The resulting axes can stun, snare, or
"jolt" a mob. (Like the level 51 ranger spell of that name, jolt
reduces the degree to which a mob hates you.) All share a single
12-second timer, and are short duration, but the absence of a mana bar
means they can be used nearly indefinitely as long as supplies hold out
(which could mean over 100 hours of continuous use), and all take effect
instantly.

Berserkers solo fairly well as long as they can single pull; the key
ability is the stun, which should be used constantly on non-casters in
order to slow their damage (on casters it may be held in reserve to stop
their spells); adds won't be stunned and thus will do full damage. In
groups, stun use can easily overwhelm an unskilled tank's ability to
hold aggro; again this is the 'zerker's key contribution, so the 'zerker
and tank should find a way to work with this. The use of stun as an
aggro producer allows the berserker to hold aggro fairly well if in the
position of main tank. Berserkers should maximize their defensive
skills either by soloing or serving as MT, as they will be thrust into
the "punching bag" position with some frequency throughout their career.

Berserkers consider themselves an "unfinished" class; the newest class
in the game, it seems to most that they are lacking features which would
make them desirable in the higher levels. Up into the high 50s this
isn't an issue for a non raider; the berserker's position as a "medium
tank" capable of both high DPS (for a primary tank) and good damage
soaking (for a light tank) makes them flexible and enjoyable to play,
and the fact that they have a short list of special abilities instead of
a spellbook full of options should make them easy to learn and to play,
even for a novice EQ player.

i play regularly in a fixed group with a zerk (70) and they are fantastic
dps ... he's parsing around 300 and that's without any AA

the stun he uses (65+) is resisted maybe 1/2 the time he uses it, so he
doesn't really bother....his snare is more reliable though as he leveled

he hits flurry and volley all the time ... lots of spam, lots of crits, lots
of damage

far as tanking goes, again, no AA, but he's definitely about the same as a
ranger or rogue (makes sense) though he has a lot of HP - and he says he's
on a warrior's HP table, but i have no idea about that

and most people still have no idea what they really do - and even some
top-end people don't know about warcry, so all the dps in the world doesn't
add character to a flat class like zerk

My zerker is only 56, but I have always been able to out DPS the tank of
the group since about level 20....

Out DPSing a main tank isn't a difficult feat, or shouldn't be. My
'Zerker managed it fairly regularly, when he wasn't the main tank himself.

In fact, I could outdamage another 'Zerker, same race and level, in
identical gear, with identical buffs:

When you stand in front of the mob, your DPS drops; you face his dodge,
parry, riposte, and you likely take stuns from him as well (unless
you're an Ogre).

So if the "main tank" is holding aggro, and you're standing behind the
mob where you should be, you really shouldn't have any trouble
outdamaging him.

My question is, do you think my general assessment of the class is still
right; can you function as a fairly decent "main tank" if your party is
lacking a warrior/paladin/SK, and can you function as a not embarassing
substitute for a "real" DPS class if you aren't the "Main tank"?

I remember, way back in the day, when a monk could do just that, taking
damage slowly enough that you could keep him healed if he was tanking,
and dishing out sufficient damage from behind that you weren't sorry to
have him along if he wasn't. Thus my definition of "medium tank"

Sadly, this flexibility doesn't tend to be prized in EQ, where you're
generally able to field someone who is -best- at any given job you need
filled, rather than taking someone who's not as good but can do some
other job instead (also not as well as the specialist)

Stun, IIRC, is on the same clock as snare and jolt, but not flurry or
volley. Since you rarely need to spam snare (only when mobs get down to
"run away" so fast you won't have time to stun and then wait for the axe
to cycle back), and shouldn't need to spam jolt if the MT is any good
(and certainly not if you're MT), I don't see any reason -not- to chain
stun, unless you're worried about stealing aggro with it.

If it only sticks half the time, thats still the equivalent of what, a
25% additional slow which stacks on top of any other slow in the game?
AND stacks with other stunners, to a lesser extent?

To me, manna free stunning was one of the biggest contributions a
Berserk could make to a group, and one of the reasons I pretty much
abandoned the class at around 56; too many mobs were immune to my stun!
I later found that this was partially due to being in groups which
were going after red to me mobs, and partially due to not having leveled
up enough for the next stun axe up.

Well, with stun my 'Zerker could tank pretty well, lots of HP and mob
being asleep during half the fight so his DPS was way down. On an
unstunnable mob, though, I tanked about as well as a rogue, which is to
say "I'll stand here and keep his attention while you rez the real
tank... be ready to rez me after"

Yeah, that was always a problem, if I wanted a group I usually had to
form it myself, because people had no idea what to do with me; even if a
random group did take me in, the leader would usually not make good use
of the resource.

As leader, though, I could look at the rest of the group, decide where
I'd do the most good, and arrange things that way. I did have some
"regular" groups who'd become educated thru this process and would call
me up when they had a slot where they could use me. As often, I'd just
solo; my 'zerker concentrated pretty heavy on regen, and for a long time
there could just chain down pretty much anything he could pull single,
taking little enough damage that his regen rate reduced "down time" to
"long enough to send a tell to a buddy"

Still? Damn! I'll write it myself.

Lets see, I've run a rogue to....hmm, 19. And I haven't played EQ in 7
months or more. Yep, that sure qualifies me as an expert.

Its fun reading the FAQ and trying to figure out which parts were
cobbled together out of posts I made Smile

I have a 53 berserker with his epic 1.0 and, even before that (had a
WMBS) I was out damaging any melee class that we grouped with, barring
the twinked rogue.

In fights lasting over 3 minutes I also out damage our wizard. Course
I don;t expect it to stay that way long but hey, it still counts.

If you equivalently equip all the melee classes, the zerker and rogue
are the high end with the top spot shuffling depending on aggro
management.

I believe a ranger with his archery AA's and that damn quiver still
outdamages about everything though.
