A month ago, I got Oblivion, and played it for an hour or so (got to
the stage when I got out from the caves to the river, and had a little
walk in the city).
After that, I lost interest. Too much walking, and too much talking.
I must confess I am a FPS (first-person-shooter) person. I had been
indifferent to RPG genre, but Oblivion was able to hook me up somewhat
in the beginning. (I re-installed Windows soon after that, and did not
play Oblivion.)
I've discovered that there are other games which could be qualified as
FPS with the elements of RPG. Such a game is Stalker -- Shadow of
Chernobyl. And a soon-to-come BioShock. (I am currently pondering
whether I should buy Stalker).
Now I have the question -- why should I play Oblivion ? I just
installed it into my computer again, and I am hesitating before the
plunge (mind you, I have heaps of the unplayed games for which I paid
money -- FEAR and FEAR Extention Pack, soon-to-come Half-Life 2
Episode 2). >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Maybe Oblivion is not for you. It is a role playing game. The
immersion of the walking and talking is part of the experience. If
you just want a stream of constant combat, Oblivion is not for you.
If you want the immersion of carefully sneaking up on your opponent to
deal a killing strike, for example, then Oblivion may have a much
richer combat system than you are used to and so may be entertaining.
Oblivion has little green dummy-arrows that will lead you where to go
for most of the quests, so you do not necessarily have to pay a lot of
attention to the dialogue. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Thanks a lot for the comments. I played Oblivion again, and I
discovered why I got impressed with it. I like the gothic-styled
graphics of the caves. It is very immersive.
I did not see the green dummy arrows, though. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

The green (or red) arrows are on the map and compass, they (usually)
point to the location of your current quest. If you are more
interested in combat than in puzzling out clues, they will be very
helpful in knowing where to go next to trigger your quest stages.
If you like combat, you will enjoy the Oblivion Gates, which start
appearing once you've done the first few parts of the main quest (take
the amulet to Jaffre and do what he tells you there). The gates are
pretty much combat runs. Most caves and abandoned forts are also
combat runs. So are the sewers in the Imperial City. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Sounds like you need to study the Manual & some FAQ & walkthough Guides.
From what you write I would say definatly forget STALKER .
You might like MORROWIND, Oblivion's predecessor...still looks good
& the best of those Elder Scrolls series of games
GOTHIC 3 is probably your best choice ...lots of fighting...simple RPG
elements..
Or GOTHIC 2: Night Of The Raven

I went to Amazon to read the users' reviews on this game (Gothic 3),
http://www.amazon.com/Aspyr-11231-Gothic-3/dp/B000FJTOL2
9 out of 10 reviewers are bashing it for bugs and for some
thoughtlessness in controls. Such a game is not immersive. And the
greatest titles which I enjoyed playing so much are immersive. And
they are immersive probably because everything is balanced: the
storyline, the graphics, the controls, the freedom of movement and so
on. Such great titles are Half-Life 2 (there is currently discussion
on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action uder the title "Half-Life 2 three
years on.", why is it). The other great gane which I really enjoyed
playing was the the quest "Syberia 2". In this game, the graphics were
beautiful, the artists put lots of thought into designing the gadgets,
scene and storyline, and all quests were natural. They were diverse,
too. This is what makes a great game. The third great game which I
played was Wolfensten 3D and Doom... although it is from the far past.
Some reviewer on the Amazon website said that Gothic 3 was as
immersive as Oblivion and even more. Well, that's good news, but
probably at the moment I am not ready to test that given the negative
reviews. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Good for you. You like Shooters and ACTION.
We, the Morrowind and Oblivion players enjoy the RPG values much more than
the killing.

What, is it my role to sell it to you? Just don't play it, I'm sure
Bethesda won't take it personally. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Yea, that's what I was thinking too as I read Beladi's remarks [I think it
was Beladi]. Half Life 2 was immersive, but still essentially a shooter.
Wolfenstein and Doom...shooters. Syberia 2 agreed was 'pretty', but was
adventure with only one storyline...one quest [well, with little sidebar
stuff as one went I suppose]...but not RPG. Oblivion is the best RPG I've
come across so far [unless one considers System Shock II; I really wish
they'd make a sequal III to that one]. Oblivion has it's flaws of course.
All RPG's I've ever played eventually become too repetitious. Oblivion's
strong point I think is the expansiveness of the world one plays within.
One can wander all day and just get lost, while finding adventures and
challenges as one goes...traversing forests, mountains, swamps, snow, and
sea. It is truely amazing how expansive it is. Graphics don't make the
gameplay, but they are fundamental in transporting one's mind to a virtual
world. >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

I dont care how rpgish it is as long as its good, System Shock was one of
those brilliant games I'll never forget, the sequel didn't do much for me
but I'm *very* excited about Bioshock. I was only mentioning it because
tooly was keen for a System shock 3...
Stalker was quite simply awesome and I'm getting ready to play through it
again, maybe with a couple of mods installed here and there. The atmosphere
in that game is second to none.
But then, I'm less of a pure rpg game type person, I actually prefer
Oblivion over Morrowind in this respect.

Yikes...I just visited the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. website and the music alone sent
shivers up my spine. Yea, that looks like something I want to try. Thanks
for the suggestion...and also I'll be looking for Bioshock as well. My
system handles Oblivion ok...a sli setup with older nvidia 7600's. Think
that will be enough for STALKER? We'll see I guess >> Stay informed about: unconvinced by Oblivion |

Oblivion - So... when will it come out? In time for Christmas?
Oblivion - Ok so not strictly speaking a Morrowind question but I do play Morrowind ... .... my specs are those of the PCG-V505EX VAIO computer i.e. a.. Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz Processor b.. 512MB PC2700 Memory (2GB Maximum) c.. 60GB Hard Drive d.. 24x..
What's up with Oblivion??? - Now pushed back to 3/20/06? I guess I shouldn't cry about not getting my 360 until January, since this game was the selling point for the 360 for me ( though I do have Kameo and PDZ collecting dust at the house right now). |
