A mimic hivemind was generated right next to the stairs of the
(hostile) cat lord level. You can guess how that ended.
I am not playing adom for a few weeks now. I am so disgusted. I had
Justy, the robes of resistance, I was 2 weaponing Justy and a sword of
sharpness with swords at 13. Absolute killing machine. Had found 3
RoDS, saved Khelly and was cruising towards victory. Ugh. so digusted

I know exactly the reason why you died.
This is a Great Secret that even the Greatest Players forget every now
and then.
The one thing beating skill, statistics, The Guidebook and several other
things...
Even more spoiler space...
Overconfidence.

How, exactly, is running into a mimic hivemind blocking the only exit
while trying to escape the cat lord an example of "overconfidence"?
He wasn't trying to take on the cat lord; while that's not an unwinnable
fight (though the only thing stronger than a sufficiently pumped-up cat
lord is probably a grossly overfed demented ratling), it's also very
risky. "Running away" (however strategically) can hardly be classified
as an act of overconfidence.
Taking on a mimic hivemind in melee, at least without specific and
certain resistances, is indeed very dangerous. But I don't think you can
lay that one at his feet as a choice he could have avoided; he wasn't
going in feeling sure he could take it on, it was blocking the only
available escape from the cat lord who was (presumably) on his tail.
I agree that overconfidence kills more players than anything else,
especially in the high end of skill. But I really don't think that this
death can be put down to overconfidence; I think it was simply sheer bad
luck. (Perhaps the RNG's way of compensating for having given him those
weapons and armor...)

I'd personally say that dual-wielding, especially when trying to run away,
is overconfidence. When you have good weapons there's no need to overkill
by wielding two of them - it's far safer to have a shield, and you generally
kill most enemies just as quickly. Also, paralysation resistance is quite
often needed unexpectedly, and I doubt he was wearing an amulet that was
significantly more useful to him than one of free action. ADOM should teach
you to always be prepared. Having said that, it is still a very sad
death...

Good point; I'd missed that detail. Objection withdrawn.
(Well, dual-wielding itself isn't inherently a sign of overconfidence -
for rangers it can actually be quite beneficial. For just about anyone
else, though, it's a very bad idea - and when trying to run away like
that, if you *do* have any shields available, swapping at least one
weapon out for the shield is probably highly advisable.)

Agreed.

Hey...I will have you know that my winning gnomish elementalist
dual-wielded scorched spear and soaker (Why couldn't they have just
called it scorcher, then you could have scorcher and soaker, the two
spears of underuse...) The DV bonuses were insane, and thanks to tree
and grey ooze breeding ground scumming, I got to lvl 14 mastery with
them...Dual wielding really isn't that bad. >> Stay informed about: ugh..... |

Any spear + a good shield will give you much insaner DV bonus, and you'll
have a higher to hit with the spear itself too. Also, training spears
doesn't require scumming oozes and forests - if anything that's a really bad
idea, since the monsters will keep getting more dangerous and powerful. All
you have to do is equip a weak spear which will take several hits to kill
and enemy instead of just one. Spider or wolf factories also help
(especially if you want to train the shield skill as well, which is really
easy to train when surrounded by enemies). And this guy was using two
swords, which would have meant pathetic DV compared with spear+shield.
