Xbox 360 sells out in Japan, PS3 cables cost extra

Console news roundup

By Dean Pullen: Friday 20 October 2006, 10:09
Click here to find out more!
SURPRISING NEWS from Japan comes from stores selling the new Xbox 360
'Blue Dragon' bundle.

100,000 of the special edition consoles that come with a Blue Dragon
faceplate, five miniature figures and the game Blue Dragon, have
already sold out with another 90,000 on their way.

According to 1up.com, one major online retailer managed to sell out of
their allotment in five minutes, with others managing to last most of
the day.

This comes just weeks before the release of the PS3 in Japan, and it's
a much-needed boost for Microsoft where most weeks it has been
struggling to shift even 1,000 units of the 360 in the land of the
rising sun.

In related console news, Sony have said that the first 500,000 PS3
systems shipped in North America will include "Talladega Nights: The
Ballad of Ricky Bobby," the Sony Pictures Entertainment comedy starring
Will Ferrell.

This will come of some surprise to prospective PS3 owners considering
that Sony have also announced that the console will not ship with a
component cable, let alone any HDMI hook-up, meaning buyers wanting to
view their PS3 in full-high-def glory must fork out even more cash for
the privilege.

U.S. games will be released at previous-generation prices of $59.99
(expect that to translate to £49.99 in the UK, if Sony ever ships
anything to Europe), but the bluetooth enabled controllers (with
unremovable batteries) will sell for a sizeable $49.99, provoking more
murmurs of discontent in the gaming community.

The PS3-branded HDMI cable will also retail at $49.99. Just for your
information you can pick these up on ebay for less than 10 bucks.

At least you get a nice Blue-ray film bundled-in with your $599
PS3...which you can't actually watch at full resolution unless you
spend more money on 'optional' accessories. Even Microsoft bothered to
bundle a component output within the 360 premium pack. µ

The console's been out for almost a year there, and it just now had its
first 100k week?

The PS3 isn't even out yet, and it already sold all 100k of its allocation.

Yes this is good news in that the 360 is picking up in Japan, but I fail
to see how this is a "bad" thing for Sony.

So...1 year after the 360 launched, they hadn't even sold 1000 units until
this past week? Meanwhile, all 100k units of the PS3 have already sold 3
weeks before launch. And yet this is bad news for Sony? Well, ok,
Microsoft can obviously get more 360s into Japan (or anywhere else in the
world) than Sony this year but this is not new information.

Blah blah blah. Don't give me a movie - and a stupid movie at that.
Give me a game! Well, I guess it could have been worse...could have been

Hah, once the PS3 comes out, prepare to see that jump to $30.

Sams Club has HDMI cables for $21.95 so I am not worried at all.

The lack of HDMI cables included isn't a big deal and makes sense. The
lack of at least component cables is stupid though. I would assume
most people that buy a next-gen console like the PS3 are going to have
a TV that at least has component inputs. So why include composite
cables at all?

But then again it's possible people won't care. I see tons of folks
that have component inputs on their TV's but still hook their DVD
players up via composite since they don't know any better.

Since HDMI TV's are the minority I don't think people will mind having
to go buy an HDMI cable. However, not including either an HDMI or
Component cable means almost everybody will need to go out and buy new
cables. People with only composite capable TV's are probably going to
be the minority so why not force them to go buy cables instead of
forcing the larger percentage of gamers with component TV's to go buy
cables?

I agree. Personally, even if they did include the Component inputs, I would
still drop $20 for HDMI because that is its selling point.

What is the input on the back of the PS3 for the component cables?

It's not an actual component output, it's a proprietary slot like the
360 and only a playstation component cable will fit.

It makes you wonder WHY Sony chose Talledega. It makes an interesting
statement about what the Japanese think of American tastes in general. Ever
play Dead Rising?

I'd say include composite and component cables. That way you hit the
lowest common denominator among the both the SDTV and HDTV crowds.

But as you point out, most people just don't know any better and still
use composite video for everything even when their equipment offers better
inputs. Can't blame them too much though. Even if the device in question
comes with different cables (like my Sony DVD player) the manual never
really explains the difference between composite, s-video or component.
Even my DVD manual barely mentions the difference between progressive scan
and interlaced, much less that you needed component cables to use
progressive scan.

HD makes things more complicated because now you have composite, s-video,
component, VGA (d-sub and sometimes even DVI), and now HDMI.

It's the same as the one used for the PS2, right? So at least some people
will already have the proper cable.

But for HDMI, the PS3 has an actual HDMI port, like it does for TOSLINK,
right? So, any HDMI cable will suffice, or will you need to get a special
PS3-dongly cable for that too?

I'm pretty sure that the decision to include a movie came from SCEI, but
WHICH movie came from Sony Studios. I'm sure that they consulted with
their American branch to determine which movie to choose.

Heck, they could have just chose it because it they thought it was going
to be the worst selling title of the bunch. Might as well get rid of some
of those excess copies somehow.
