Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

I don't want to start a new alt because I'm sick of the 1-70 grind.

I don't want to farm for gold or rep because it's either really boring
or I'll probably get ganked by another farmer.

I don't want to run dungeons because I either have to hold a team's
hand as a tank or trust that we have a competent tank & healer on my
DPS character, which is few and far between.

I don't want to leave my guild for a more active raiding team because
the guild has been good to me and we still have a lot of fun, even
though we're extremely unorganized and casual.

I don't want to finish up the quests on my two level 70s because I'm
sick of playing alone.

Sometimes I log in and don't know what I'm going to do for the next
hour or two, and when I think about doing something in particular, it
sounds unappealing after 5 seconds.

Take a break. I took a 4 month break shortly after TBC came out, came
back and I'm enjoying the game more than I did before.

Options:
- find a better guild. move servers if you have to. this made a huge
difference to me.
- switch sides. Alliance vs Horde, I enjoy horde more even though
alliance has it easier in many respects, and some better quest chains.
- focus on one character. some people like altoholicism, but I find
the progression too tedious
- limit the amount of time you play per week. I enjoy WoW more playing
10-15 hrs a week than 20-30.
- set meaningful, achieveable goals. I want 'x' item, i want 'y'
mount, etc. Helps focus your playing time.
- take a break. walk away for a few months/forever.

Between the time i retired (pre 2.0.2) and when I returned (2.2) the
world changed. More dailies, character ability changes, nerfs to
attunements, etc. There was no netherwing/sha'tar skyguard/orgrilla
when I left.

I anticipate once I've wrapped up all my reputation quests, have Kara
on farm and our guild progression is stalling @ 25 man raids I might
take another break. That's still a few months away. Right now I get
online, have a number of objectives and have guildies who share those
same goals and are helpful.

In short, if it feels like an obligation or work, WALK AWAY.

Yup, yup, and yup.

I'm sick of soloing, too, although I still play sometimes with that
Hunter, just to get quests done faster (who I've realized - it's not
that he doesn't know how to control his aggro, it's that he just
doesn't want to. He likes being the center of attention. Look at me!
I'm so uber, I pulled aggro).

I love my Pally - he's done more in the game that all my other
characters combined. But I'm getting so sick of taking six days to
kill anything. I'm tired of fighting my way to a vein in a cave, being
on the third-to-last monster, seeing an Ally come in, kill the
remaining two, mine the vein, and leave, while I'm still fighting that
third-to-last monster, and there's nothing I can do to speed up the
battle.

World Defense? Yeah, great, except other players don't considerately
stand in front of me and kindly beat themselves to death on my damage
reflection like monsters do. I cast one Judgement and heal myself
once. Whoops. Out of Mana. Warrior hits you for 600. You hit Warrior
for 100. Ho hum.

I tend to take the game very seriously, so I've always thought about
starting a team with somebody, and being a complete jackass. Playing a
variant of "Name That Tune", but called "Name Those Deaths". Hmm. A
level 1 quest. Goofball lvl 1 Char #1: "I'm going to try and die six
times on this quest". Goofball lvl 1 Char #2: "I'll see your six
deaths, and raise you three deaths, a wipe, and at least one piece of
armor breaking". Goofball lvl 1 Char #1: "Yer bluffing. I call". Razz

Maybe it's just time for a break. Smile

Sounds like you need to join a bigger guild that raids. Raiding is
incredibly fun, and if you haven't done any, you have missed a huge
part of the game, not to mention a huge part of the content. As for
not wanting to leave your guild, don't. Just leave with your best
raid-ready char and go join a different guild with that one. Keep your
other chars in your current guild so you don't have to break those
ties. If you look inside yourself and decide that the real decision is
between taking your best char and going to join a raiding guild for
new adventures, or quitting the game out of boredom... well, if you
quit the game out of boredom, then you aren't going to be hanging out
with your current guild much then anyway, are you? Not much of a
choice there, in my eyes.

I stopped. I may come back sometime though.
But I spent 11 months playing just one game
only, and felt I needed to play some of the
other games I have. What's the point in
staying around? Some of the "what do I do now?"
questions seem a bit confused. The answer could
easily be "what did you do all those months ago
before WoW?"

The WoW community (and may most MMORPG communities)
seem a bit different from other gaming groups.
It's almost cult-like. When people get tired of
it they tend to ask "tell me what to do so that I
can stay", and others encourage people to stay and
stick it out. As if there were only one game
to play for the rest of everyone's lives.

No offense, but if you're in one of the oldest guilds and they're
still struggling with Kara and need constant baby sitting, you might
want to move on. Things sound like they've stagnated.

My guild is very very casual, but we're running Gruul and Magtheridon
via a guild alliance and have Kara on farm. I consider myself a casual
player (~10-15hrs/week) and I'm in Kara team2. More often than not we
do a full clear in 2 days. If your guild doesn't get it, they don't
get it.

Biggest mistake I made previously was staying around in a guild long
past its due date out of loyalty to the GM. You're surrounded by
negativity ever day, fighting the inevitable dissolution of the guild,
or just thwarting apathy. If its not working, its not working.
Fortunately with server transfers available, there's options.

Look, if someone wants to leave a guild -- they're retiring, the have
a different priorities, they've got a personality conflict, they want
to progress faster -- I wish them well! We're all playing this game
for enjoyment and have different goals, strict guild guidelines are
not going to change this fact. Mature players will stick with mature
players. People who take guild membership personally need to get a
life.

You're a halfway decent warrior tank. The world is your oyster. People
in this group could probably find you space in their guild(s) if you
needed.

Good luck.

I hear you. My gear's not nearly as nice as yours, and I know how much
it costs me.

(Not to mention that, even though I try to round up as many mobs as I
can, I still find it a tad embarrassing how long it takes me to kill
Elites 30 levels lower than I am.)

What's even worse, Jill, is that I can't run people through dungeons
without charging them for repair costs because 40 low level elites
pounding on me still hurts my armor, or I would do that.

I'm leading a Kara group for the first time tonight, and even that
makes me kind of groan. I could PVP for awhile, but I know I'll have
to do it with puggies, which... again... makes me groan.

Trust me, if you're teetering on taking a break already, if you start
raid leading it will bump you from teetering to throwing your computer
out the window and stalking the Blizzard grounds with a sniper rifle.
Nothing I've found in the game is more stressful. Now stuff doesn't
just happen in the raid, now stuff happens and it's suddenly YOUR
FAULT. Person A wants to go and doesn't get to? Your fault. Run
doesn't start on time? Your fault. You wipe on a boss? Your fault
that you didn't pick better people to come. Hunter wins a good
dagger? The rogue will blame you for letting him roll.

Not that any of this stuff actually IS your fault, but plenty of
fingers will start to point your way, even unintentionally. I too am
laying low right now, but not from the whole game - I'm just taking a
break from the raiding scene. I still enjoy playing the game and have
fun with it, but the raid leading drama issues combined with my own
whole life feeling scheduled have caught up with me. The higher ups
in my guild know that for the time being, I'll be there for 1 raid on
Thursday nights (that I will not be leading), but otherwise, I'm
soloing on an unguilded alt Very Happy.

Unfortunately, the guild I'm in has a rule where if one character
leaves, the other characters are kicked, and I can never return. Being
one of the oldest guilds in WoW, this is kind of a big deal.

Yeah, raid leading can indeed be stressful. I've never done it, but I
surely do hear from my friends who do. If you find you like leading
them, John, then go for it. If it turns out more of a pain in the ass,
like mentioned above, then just stick with being a *member* of the
raid Smile Much more enjoyable, unless you're a compulsive type-A
personality. It's best to learn how to raid a particular instance, and
master your class in such raids, for a bit of time.... and *then*
think about leading them. IMO, of course.

While I'm waiting to evacuate as my entire county burns down....

You know, I actually did this once quite accidently. I rolled a BE
Mage. Died at least 2 times per level plus the deaths that I sort of
planned.

Just don't roll a Draenei Mage for this team. That Gift will keep
them alive. Mine's level 26 and so far not one death. So very un-Mage-
like!

Well, it is just a game... Smile If you played basketball for 20-30 hours a
week, you'd get tired of it too.

So far I haven't got tired of it yet (my highest character is still level
55), but I have done lots of things to make life more interesting:

* setting up a twink in the 19 bracket

* picking a different faction (Horde) and positioning a twink for the 29
bracket

* trying alternate classes (Rogue, Warrior, Warlock, Mage, ...)

Of course, I'm sure you already know about all of that. There are a lot of
L70's that I see hanging out for nothing more than the social experience --
it's not about leveling or fighting, but it's about hanging out with friends.
Some L70's like to help people through the game (a nice horde L70 mage has
adopted my Rogue twink and is helping her through instances free of charge).
My L55 warlock has run a few people through the deadmines and it's fun,
especially if they are relatively new to the game. You can enjoy the game
through their experience.

I don't know what my endgame aspirations are (by the time I hit 70, the next
expansion will probably be out anyway). I'm not the type of person who's
going to do endless grinding for epic equipment, but I am the type of person
who likes battleground play, so I'll probably continue to position my
characters for the battlegrounds. Having never been on a raid, I don't know
if I'd enjoy that or not. Time will tell.

Once the death knight class comes out, that'll at least give people a way to
try a new class without having to grind all the way through the levels.

I felt that way shortly after TBC was released, so I quit playing for
nearly half a year. I quite often felt that it was more of a duty to log
on reguarly and work at getting the heroic keys for my priest, so I just
stopped when my Game Card ran out 2 month after the release, but I
didn't really play much the last month.

Now I've started to enjoy the game again, but I've changed to be very
casual about it, and I don't raid.

If you don't have fun playing now, there's little hope you will regain
that feeling without a break. Try find a single player game, and play
that for a while, then you might start missing WoW, but don't start
playing again too soon either. If the guild is good, they will accept
you back if you does return.

Funny Scholo happening - Was on a scholo run last night ... Gandling was wearing a green winter hat. We joked about if we could rip it off of his bloody head after we defeated them (ok, it is an evil RP guild), and wouldn't ya know it ... it did indeed drop. Too funny.
