I don't think there are many of us still playing Daggerfall. Thanks
for reminding me, though, I do have a question.

I got the quest from a Temple to perform an exorcism on a child, if
necessary, and it turned out to be a scam. The kid ran off with the
holy object. I went to the inn where I had first met the child's
guardian and found a woman who would tell me where they went for 50
gold pieces. I handed over the gold and she gave me the name of a
store which doesn't exist. I went to every store in Daggerfall City
without success, then exited the city and came back and searched
again. I am now searching every inn, without much luck.

Is there a way to find the scammers, or am I out of luck on this one?

One thing I liked/like about DF is problems like
this. It could be a bug
of course, but you often gets only half of the
necessary info like this:
ie. the store's name but not the name of the town,
and you have to ask
around. The closest solution I can think of is to
search for the person,
and not the store. If there is a person associated
with your quest, his/her
name will be a topic on the dialogue screen under
"where is"

Normally it covers only the town you are in, but
sometime it covers the
whole region, reflecting the persons degree of
informations.
Usually, as you suggest, the inns are the best source
of information

The worst case scenario, of course, will be, that you
fail the quest. But
this will only result in a few point of reputation,
which is easily recovered.

I have also had problems with this quest. But in my
case, the child just
wasn't there. I always, as a precaution, makes a new
save when accepting
a quest, and use that instead. When I succeed, I
replace the original one
with this.

In your situation you got the name of a store, and
you supposed it was
in the town where you were, daggerfall city, -
correct? When it isn't
there, I would guess that it was to be looked for in
the daggerfall region
but not elsewhere.

The programmers did a good job on DF giving the npc's
different degree's
of 'who knows what' and 'who know most'. The best
general source of information
about people are the landlords. The guild's are also
worth a visit

I have done this quest before and the person I need to find is the
child's guardian. His name does not appear under Where Is Person. The
child's name is there, but that only refers me back to the house where
I first met her. I have checked and the house is always empty. I
think there is a bug associated with this quest. The times I have
finished this quest successfully, the guardian didn't leave town.

I like this feature, too, except when things get buggy and you receive
bad information.

I agree. Daggerfall is very realistic.
Sometimes you get the elevator, sometimes you get the shaft.
I think the game teleports them into an unconnected area once in a while
'cause I've seen similar things.
Do you think if you wait around the child shows back up somewhere?

It took several game days to check all the shops and inns looking for
her guardian. At the end of that I checked the original house again
without success. I gave up on this quest and took another one.
