Hi guys,

Check this out...CEO of danish Cimber Air are doing acrobatics with a
ATR...I have the ATR from FLight1....didnīt realize it could do such types
of rolls...

Believe me, danish authorities are NOT happy with his manueveres. Thinking
of taking his license.

Just to your information....no passengers was on board...Wink

If you can perform the manoeuvre at +1or2 g, it shouldn't be a problem,
hence the barrel roll, not an axial one.

Normally this would be true, but in the case of a transport type
airplane such as this one attempting a roll like this one starting at
the altitude this roll was initiated, the roll can be a REAL problem if
entered early. This was a barrel roll off a climbing turn entry coming
off the deck....extremely dangerous due to the roll inertia and slow
roll rate required to transverse the arc of the roll.
The roll rate is so slow that an extremely high degree of dish out is
possible on the back side of the roll requiring more air than the
airplane has for recovery.
This guy was VERY lucky!

Would you kindly point me to where you get your facts about this flight?

I have been looking for confirmation as to who piloted the flight, and what
consequences it had, if any Surprised/

What I have found so far is roumers about who the pilot was, but no talking
about his license any where.

BTW, the correct link for those photos was posted by Marcel in the "PING:

Hi Tommy,

Read the newspapers, watch the TV. There has been quite some details about
it. Fortunately it didnīt have any consequences, but that doesnīt make it a
smart thing to do.

I have read that Slv.dk have considered a suspension of his license...

Depends ;o) The pilot had fun, and the plane spotter had the thrill of a
lifetime Surprised)

Cheating is smart, getting cought is stupid ;o)

No they have not, they have said, that it is a possibillity, however
unlikely since the pilot was not drunk, and no one was hurt or injured.

OK finally our news have discovered the news, and has started writing their
normal guessing up as we go Surprised/

What I can decipher from all the nonsense and mumbo-jumbo lingo used by
journalists who know zip about flying, but wants to sound hip, is this:

The stunt was done by the CEO of Cimber Air, Mr. Jørgen Nielsen, who was
alone in the plane (no co-pilot to blame), the plane belongs to Cimber Air
but does not have its colours yet, because it, until reasently, has been
leased to Oman Air, and he was flying it as a civil pilot, not as an airline
pilot (how nice to have your own Airline fleet).

Mr. Jørgen Nielsen is a skilled pilot (ex. fighter F-104 and F-16), and he
claims that he was just training for the annual airshow, which will take
place this summer at Vandel Airbase here in DK, in which he is a regular
show pilot.

Our local FAA (SLV) is awaiting a full report from Mr. Nielsen, before
taking steps into deciding the consequences, which might be any thing from a
raised eyebrow to suspending his certificate, but most likely a hefty fine.
He did break a few laws, doing his stunt, one is that the ATR is only
certified for a 60 deg. bank, an other is, that he was not cleared for
stuntflying above Sonderborg Airport, at that moment.

According to Mr. Nielsen, he didn't break any major laws, and comparers it
to doing 80mph on a 70mph highway in a car (hmmmm?).

The pictures has been removed from the original site, because the author
thought they had stirred up to much noise on the site, and he might be
right, after all it was his pictures that started the whole buhahah, and
they generated 20.000+ hits, on a site where 500 is a lot more than one can
hope for.

So far the lesson learned must be: If you happens to see something
spectacular, and has a camera at hand, think twice before going public ;o)

Hi Tommy

There is a lot of noise out there on this stunt. I fly with Cimber every 14
days from Sonderborg to Copenhagen and my only question is:

When will the next stunt be performed so I can be on the flight? I would
love to sit on the back seat of that little fat bastard ATR when it is doing
a roll. I think it is extremely cool that he did this.
I can not see any problems at all with it. He was alone and the plane is
even above water when doing the roll so if he had crashed it would have been
in water.

Heh, heh, yes it could make for a sweet experience being onboard for such a
flight, if you are prepared for it ;o)

As to the safety, he might have been over water at the time, but it was
Friday afternoon on the start of a 3 days weekend (Whitsun), the sun was
shining, so the Als Sund (the water next to Sonderborg) would have been
crowded with yachts and had one of those gotten hit with debris, all hell
would have broken loose Surprised/

My guess is, that he was up there, all by his lonesome, doing a ferrying
flight, and got bored, and got the idea, which most of us simmers do, when
we are up there, with no particular place to go: "Let's see what this baby
can really do!" Surprised)

I'd like to send these photos off to our display flying work shop but I
can't seem to be able to access them any longer using the supplied link.
I did pull them up initially, but now the link is showing as an overload
on photobucket.
If you or anyone else comes up with a set of these photos, I'd like a
workable link if possible.
Thanks

It's puzzling. I'm on a Macbook Pro using Firefox with a clear cache.
The link shows me a German forum with squares where the photos should
asking me to upgrade to Photobucket Pro and saying "bandwidth exceeded".

I get the same... using a pc. That's the deal with free sites, - only so
