Now, what I'm looking for is something which is quite far from a
traditional IF adventure. What I'd like to see is a textual RPG with
as much open ended gameplay as possible: a huge world to explore,
maybe skills to use and interactivity with the gameworld (should be
not too hard to implement a satisfying system in a purely textual
environment), quests to complete (maybe in a variety of possible ways
and/or with choices to make which affect the game and the gameworld),
some more advanced interactivity like being able to lead a true
alternate life and being able to do something like getting a job,
buying a house, maybe even owning your shop (yes, I know, I'm
dreaming ). I'd really like to hear some suggestions for a game like
this.
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |

Does it have to be single-player, or is multi-player acceptable too?
If multi-player is OK, then it sounds like a MUD might suit your needs.

The Discworld MUD has all of these things. You can find out more at
http://discworld.atuin.net/
(Disclaimer: I'm a creator there, though at the moment not a very active one.)

Thanks for your answer, but I've already tried playing MUDs in the
past, with scarce results. Achaea was probably the most similar to
what I was looking for, but I found it way too complex.
So I'd really like something single player only. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |

I have the answer for you. Check out Legendary Tales here:
www.legendarytales.com
This is a text based RPG engine. Someone made a game with it called 3
skulls (which they want you to buy, but you can register for free on
the site and then become part of the open source thing and get it for
free). Then you can make your own RPG or wait for someone to make
one. I've been thinking about it...
You can have a party of up to six with different races, skills,
classes... all kinds of good stuff. I really like it. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |

Oh yeah, I remember that one. The engine was quite impressive, it
allowed to make some quite complex scripting easily (at least from
what I read) and could be used to make a wonderful open-ended text
RPG. Unfortunately, the 3 Skulls RPG which comes with it isn't very
good IMHO: too repetitive and too few things to do, even if the
nonlinear environment is obviously a big plus. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |

I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I came across an odd
cross between an ASCII rogue-like and interactive fiction just the
other day. Take a look at this blog post: http://tigsource.com/articles/2008/01/15/legerdemain
I haven't tried it myself yet, but the mix of RPG elements with
dungeon crawling and interactive narrative might suit your needs.
Otherwise, I'd suggest heading for a videogame forum such as
insertcredit.com or selectbutton.net and posting your request there.
The members of those forums are into a wide variety of games that
range from ancient to contemporary and from obscure to mainstream;
they know a lot about niche fantasy roleplaying titles, roguelikes,
MOOs, bizarre Japanese games, and others that probably include some of
the features you're asking for.
However, I have a feeling that you won't find any one game that offers
all of those things together. This is an experience many gamers are
familiar with. If that's the case and you're really obsessed, survey
many titles that come close to being your dream game and start
thinking about developing the game yourself! >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |

Thanks for the link, this looks really cool. I do read the TIG forums
but never check the front page, I probably would have missed this
otherwise.
It's written in Java and deployed with web start, interestingly
enough. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a iF - or better, a textual RPG |
