Well, dear Phoenix, the computer seems to work. So far I have formatted my
hard drive three times due to software and hardware failure. This new
computer, although state of the art, has driven me insane for the past few
days.
Hope everything is alot better from now on. I did not expect winxp to be so
***king unstable.
I never had any serious software probs with my old one with win98.

Anyway. This is all for now,
Iakovos:)

LOL...how come you are having so many problems?
You know, the only times I have had to format with XP is when I used
the old Beta 2..back when it wasn't released...You had to format with
every new Beta and RC because you couldn't upgrade over it.

Do you know? I have about 10GB of software installed...and about 60GB
of games....When my Start menu opens up, it opens up in 4 columns and
the last one is almost filled (about 3-4 spaces to go)...so you can
imagine the amount of stuff installed on my computer....my registry
must be huge...
Plus, I have tons of stuff lying around here and there and always try
out new stuff and all...
My computer is on almost 24/7 and I play games on it, work on it, chat
on it, do everything...and it has never rebooted once without my
permission. It only reboots if I do a driver update or antivirus
update.
Not to mention the hardware...I have 2 HDDs and 2 optical
drives...plus 6 USB devices plugged in...plus the general stuff...2
ethernet cards...etc...
Never seen a conflict.

WinXP's memory management is fantastic. In earlier times, I had to
reboot after playing a heavy 3D game because everything used to slow
down. This XP computer stays on ALL the time and never runs out of
memory or crashes, etc.

I have SP1 installed and SP2 as well.

As I advised you, it is a MUST to install both of them. I know you
were unsure about them, but it is a MUST.

I formatted my laptop and like a fool, thought I would do a little
surfing with it. I connected it and BANG. I got 4 different worms
including trojan horses on my system. I had a bloody tough time, even
with Norton, trying to remove them.
It's not enough to only install SP1. You need SP2.

Let me know the specific problems you're having and I'll see if I can
help.

The unluckiness of a beginner?

Well, I had SP1, formatted the drive and installed SP2.

Well, so far so good. My modem was a faulty one so I bought another.
My main question is... somehow the drivers of the new modem, by Zoom, seem
to disappear on their own.
XP afterwards does not recognize the modem (a USB one), and I have to
re-install the drivers that are already installed.
This has happened twice so far, managed to re-install the drivers with no
problem and continued working.
But I wonder... can drivers be unstable and disappear?

Secondly, started copying dvds... and what a pleasure it is Smile
Any idea what's the difference between a DVD-R and a DVD+R?
My dvd writer can write on both, but I wonder why two formats? There is a
difference in price as well.

Cya,
Iakovos:)

Probably. Its really maddening when that happens Smile Because its tough
to figure out what exactly the problem is...
Sorry for replying so late...I have been really busy...
did you figure it out?

Basically, a format hasn't been decided upon. even my burner can burn
both formats...dvd-r is from philips, dvd+r is from
sony/panasonic...or something like that...dvd-r is older..dvd+r is
newer...
dvd-r is cheaper...although they say it may be a little more unstable
than dvd+r..
dvd+r is more reliable..and more expensive...
as far as compatibility goes, they have relatively the same...

Nope, I had only SP2, so I installed that one. How can both systems be
active at the same time?

So far no problems. Quick question: I downloaded MSN Messenger 6.2 and
installed it on the pc, but the old version, 4.7 still exists. Will anything
happen if I uninstall it? It seems to be integrated with SP2.

Not really. After having formatted the drive 3 times, the drivers have
disappeared twice. I reinstalled them and so far they seem to work fine.

I'll keep you updated with any questions.

Cheers,
Iakovos:)
