Just curious, but this has never happened to me before. On the
first level of the mines, I encountered a ghost, with a little
bit of loot---in sum, what looks like a bones. But the ghost
behaves in every way as if it were a pet, although I certainly
did nothing to tame it; my first real realization that it was
there, in fact, was the message "you displaced the ghost" (or
something very similar). There was a magic trap nearby, which I
hit just before finding the ghost, but I don't see off hand how
this could tame it.

Does anyone know what could have caused this, or is it just
something that happens, with a fair degree of rareness? (Given
the number of ghosts I've seen, it would have to be very, very
rare.)

When a magic trap gives the "You feel charismatic!" message, you gain
1 point of CHA and you tame every tameable monster adjacent to you.

It is not uncommon for a magic trap to blind the player and generate
dangerous monsters which kill the player within a turn or two. So the
trap is also likely to be the cause of the bones file.

The "you feel charismatic" effect of a magic trap tames nearby monsters
(in addition to bumping your charisma up by one). You should be able to tell
wether a certain monster is tame with the farlook command.

Maybe it was a polymorph trap, and your pet turned into a ghost.

IIRC, it also ignores the target's MR for purposes of checking vs. the saving
throw, so you can even tame high level critters like Archons and Ki-Rin.
Wait, I'll wizmode check...

Ok, the results were somewhat inconclusive. An adjacent seargent and nurse
went peaceful, 'cause they're human, and humans don't go tame. An adjacent
arch-lich *also* went peaceful. Maybe my recollections were wrong, I just
remember using magic traps when I had a pet Archon go peaceful on me.

If I've read the spoilers correctly, Arch-liches can't be tamed because
they're covetous.
And magic traps ignore resistance.

Aren't ghosts NOPOLY? (i.e. nothing can turn into one)

I go with the "magic trap made James feel charismatic" theory myself; it
happened to me once in the Valley of the Dead.

Raisse, killed by the ghost of Senthi

I think that's it. I didn't notice the you feel charismatic
message, but I easily could have missed it.
