Last night i'm not sure what happened, but /1 and /2 stopped working. I
rebooted, and still no luck. During this time, i could hear all
channels, and even hear trade outside the city. I was helping a guildy
grab some scales in burning steppes and i saw a request for a port to
IF. Normally, within a city, i click to see where they are, so i know
we are in the same city. (I wish port requests would be in general, not
trade.) But, being i saw it in the steppes, i figured it was steppes
General, so i offered to help. I wans't until after he joined our party
that we realized he was in Darnassus. Oops.
I logged on this morning, same issue. Went to petition a GM, but tech
issues say to check the website. The tech support forum is empty, the
game knowledge under "chat" was of no help, and the search returned a
SQL Server error.
I turned yell channel on (always off, because it's an annoying channel)
and yelled my question for help in SW with apologies for using the
channel. No answer. Ported to IF and yelled the same, and listed to the
teenagers tell me to format my drive. One even said deltree was faster
than format c:. I *almost* responded, but realized he wasn't worth my
time.
One guy told me to make sure channels were selected. Obviously he
missed the point (though he was polite and helpful), but that gave me
an idea. I unchecked channels 1-4 from the general tab "join new
channel" (5 was unchecked) (i forgot about those). Then i checked 1-5.
1,3, and 5 started to work, 2 and 4 still won't (odd, isn't it?).
Well, i unchecked 2 and 4, then shutdown. I wonder if i check it after
the reboot if it will help, but that has to wait.
Oh, and i turned off yell again. There's only so much i can tolerate of
that channel.

I had these same problems... try...
/leave 1 (2, 3, etc.)
then
/join 1 (2, 3, etc)
If this does not work to no avail, reply and ask for direct email and I will
forward emails directly from bliz. >> Stay informed about: Can't talk in channels |

You *could* delete your wtf folder, but then you'll have to re-do all your
settings.

Try searching for chat-cache.txt and delete those, then you'll only lose
your chat settings. There are two locations for each character where a
chat-cache.txt is kept. I don't know why there are two, but just delete
them both. That worked for me when I couldn't see the system messages
anymore.

Glad you fixed it. If you get the problem again (I've seen it multiple
times), something else you might try is manually editing the
SavedVariables file. It's pretty easy and sure beats deleting it
wholesale and losing your entire config (which is the standard response
from Blizzard no matter how much specific detail you give -- echoes of
Microsoft it seems).
The chat window is particularly buggy. The mechanisms of
joining/leaving that are available in the window tab GUI and on the
command line via /join and /leave are often de-synched -- one will work
and the other won't, as if they are using separate config variables.
They really need to revamp that code. >> Stay informed about: Can't talk in channels |
