Archived from groups: rec>games>video>sega (more info?)

The last two years at this any time of year I couldn't get a Super
NES for less than $60 off of e-bay before shipping, buy it now. Now
there are over ten for less than $50 plus shipping. At the same time,
I wasn't able to sell my Genesis 2 in two auctions asking for less than
$20 shipped! Now I can't find an SMS or Genesis console for less than
$45 plus shipping, and Sega CDs and 32X are $30-50 as well. It's
definitely only the older Sega stuff that has gone up in value though.
I think the problem has been that Gamestop and EB had liquidated their
older games and flooded the channel with cheap consoles and carts. A
friend of mine might be right as well, in that everything comes back up
in value eventually. N64 and DC are still dirt cheap online, so maybe
they'll go back up in the next five years, who knows. Time will tell
whether this is just an early Christmas season price hike, of if
classic Sega consoles are finally getting their proper respect.

usually, items that are more uncommon command higher prices on ebay.

being that it was rare to see a sega master system in someone's home
during the 80's -- let alone next to an nes -- always indicated to me
that sms's were relatively uncommon.

in all honesty, literally 95% of the games for the sms were garbage. i
had an sms along with a nintendo and know that i got burnt for my brand
loyalty towards sega during that time. i've never tallied up just how
much i wasted on sega, but it's a large sum of money.

this probably isn't anything you guys don't already know...

ps--if anyone sees a japanese dreamcast/rez combo on ebay, let me know.

In my recent search to get a Sega CD, I noticed the same thing. Good to
see Sega getting some respect Wink

Wow, that's wild. I wonder where the sudden interest in the old school
Sega stuff is coming from? Well, it's good for the sellers...bad for
the buyers. Wink

Argh, speaking of the N64, I am *actually * considering picking up
another one...why, I don't know. I hated the damn thing when I had it,
but I really liked Duke Nukem: Zero Hour(actually kept it when I sold
off the N64 and the other games) and San Francisco Rush(wished I'd of
kept this one as well)... Wink

forgot to mention rambo 3...it's a cool light gun game and probably the
best one on the system.

so, i guess only 91% sucked.

i didn't have enough money to pick up a bunch of sms games at the toys
'r us in wales back in 1997...they had a bunch of games that i didn't
even realize were available on the master system. yes yes, i know that
the master system was popular in europe.

i heard golden axe warrior was good, but i've never played it...

You got a pretty good list. But mine is actually smaller (composed of
five). And it has all the titles you've mentioned except yours doesn't
include Black Belt. I really liked that game. The Ninja should get
honorable mention too. There are couple other decent games but nothing
exceptional. I agree the nes (or famicom) has a larger list of
classics. But not that many more.

The SMS has a lot of good titles...but as SMS stuff was hard to come
by, you may not have gotten a chance to ever try them. Via emulation,
I've tried quite a few of them(trying to make a list of what I'd like
to buy) and I must say that it's got both a lot of solid titles, and a
lot of shitty titles. I'd still say the NES, with it's larger library,
probably has more shitty titles to go with the expanded library...but I
wouldn't even know where to guess the percentage would be. Break out an
emulator sometime and just sort of go through the SMS library...I think
you'll be pleasently surprised(I know I was). Smile

> What's wrong with Zillion 2?

uh...you mean "the tri-formation cycle." i'm hoping you're talking
about some unreleased in the states version that's awesome and like the
original. is there a zillion lost levels out there somewhere that's
actually like the first one? i was so excited about zillion 2 after
playing the first one that i had the chick at children's palace dig
through their stock 'cause it wasn't out on the shelf. they had it. i
bought it. it sucked.

lord of the sword had pretty colors, but sucked. i'm a bit biased
against this one 'cause i canceled my mega man 2 pre-order to pick up a
used copy of lord of the sword instead.

the ninja is good if you like ikari warriors/commando stuff. didn't
get into black belt.

but, still sucked...even though it was two player.

space harrier was good. i accidentally traded castlevania for it at
the time. after burner was inexcusible.

king's quest was lame. ghostbusters was nothing more than a stale four
year old activision conversion. spellcaster blew dog. y's should only
be played on the turbo-cd system.

Absolutely true.

I can't agree here at all. I'd say that about 80% of the SMS
library was at least good, with at least 30 highly original high quality
titles. I currently own 40 SMS games, and plan own owning at least 60
of the total 114 US library before all is said and done. Have you
played any NES games lately?

Yeah, Sonic 1 on SMS is very cool, I liked the way they handled it as
well. Is it the same as the GG version, or are they both different?

> And to continue in that direction, what about Psycho Fox

Man, Psycho Fox so good! I just wish it didn't make use of the "pause"
button so much(playing it on the PBC is a bitch).

never played the sms version of sonic, although i did heare it was
good. i also heard that the sms golden axe was good, too.

the first time i had t chance to play psycho fox was in 1996--well
after its release and i was underwhelmed.

marble madness wasn't released in the states, was it?

i've heard that castle of illusion was good, but, again, never played
it.

Ugh, GA was real, real bad. We're talking Turbo-version bad here.

That's too bad, it's pretty hip.

> marble madness wasn't released in the states, was it?

I believe it was...but this goes to what I was saying about it being
hard to find SMS stuff here in the US. About the only places I ever saw
SMS stuff was a Toys R Us.

> i've heard that castle of illusion was good, but, again, never played

It's another one where they took some liberties over the Genesis
version, and it turns out being a very different, but also very good
version of the game. The entire Mickey and Donald series of games on
the SMS all came out real well.

i never had any interest in getting the import golden axe for my
turbo-cd. never really enjoyed the game past the 15 minutes, or so, it
took to beat it.

i was playing exile, last armageddon, and download 2 imports at the
time.

if i remember correctly, egm gave the sms golden axe version slightly
higher marks than the genesis version. i think i remember their
rationale being challenge or something.

I think it showed up on both card and CD, the only difference being the
music. At any rate, if you didn't care for the game in general, I can
see not putting forth the time or effort to try it out. I happened upon
the ISO and roms of it, so I did....and man I wish I didn't. Wink

Yeah, I don't know what it could have been. I mean, graphically, for
the SMS the game was amazing...but it was so beyond-choppy it was damn
near laughable, which just killed it for me. This is one of those games
I actually prefer on the Genesis. The arcade version is just *way* too
short, and way too easy...even if it does have more color and
animation.

it's too bad that the actual game element in spellcaster was executed
so poorly.

i had mystic defender, but never really got into it. yes, it was a
pretty game with interesting use of color.

it's a good thing we have the option to play both versions now. that
being true, the turbo-cd version was not only superior but very
significantly longer.
