I see that Oblivion is out, and have read the minimum and suggested
system requirements.

Suggested requirements
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements:
Windows XP
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card
and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

My system has:
windows XP, 512 RAM, 2.6 Ghz P4,
128 DDI Radeon 9700 Pro (128MB),
more than enough free disk,
16x dvd drive
and the rest of the minimum requirements are met.

QUESTION1 -- how good or how bad will Oblivion run on my system?
QUESTION2 -- is the DVD drive used other than for install?

(Morrowind wore out my CD drive before I found a NO-CD to use).

I would guess it will run ok at 800 x 600 on your system. I think
another 512 of ram would probably do you wonders. There definately
some people having bugs - so don't be scared by the "my 7800 gtx slows
down to a crawl" posts. That isn't necessarily typical. Some guy even
got it running on a 5200.

>QUESTION2 -- is the DVD drive used other than for install?

It checks to make sure the dvd is in the drive before it loads the
game, but I believe there is a no-dvd crack out there as some people
have said they are using it.

www.elderscrolls.com has a forum with a ton of discussions.

I have a similar, low-end system: 2.0 Ghz P4, 768 RAM, Radeon 9800
Something (256 MB), etc. I am able to run it with satisfactory results
at 800x600. It does lose framerate when fighting multiple mobs, but
still 100% playable. No problems with sound, etc. I have most of the
graphics options turned off, and the draw distances to about 50%.

Yours will run slightly worse. The game does offer a 640x480 mode, so
you could go with that if your unhappy with your frame rate. Otherwise,
decrease your draw distance, and turn off all the extra graphics
options. It will still look good. If you can get to 800x600 with all
graphics turned off, it still looks better than pretty much any game
out there, you'll just see grass, trees, etc. pop into existance about
50ft ahead of you. If that will really bother you, maybe skip it for
now.

Otherwise, get it... it's a great game. And it was designed to look
good on a normal (non-HD) t.v. screen, thanks to our XBox 360
friends/enemies. So 640x480 will look good.

I think it does a DVD check to see if the DVD is in the drive, and
that's it. No resources loaded from DVD that I can tell. If it does on
off chance load data from the DVD, you can always use DVD ripping
software, put it on your HD, mount, crack, and you're off to the races.

No real way of trying until you try it but I would suggest upgrading the video
card and getting more RAM.

I've given that strong consideration before, except that the type of
memory for my system is not easy to find and costs more than most. I
have a DELL 8250 which has something called RDRAM. I can find a price
of $300 for adding 512MB -- but not sure I want to do that at this time.

That will run it. You'll have to play around with and tweak some of the
visual settings and screen resolution, but it will run. You and I both
will be looking for a no-cd 'thing' I think Wink
The must-have-disk-in-drive-to-play is a gift from the publisher, not
Bethesda.
My systems are:
X2 4800+, 2 gigs pc3200, 2x 7800GTX's in SLI
and
P4 2.66, 1 gig PC3200, 1 x FX5900-128

You really should get more RAM.. 1gig is super cheap nowadays..
$80 US and $100 CAN for 1 gig.. just do it! You should experience a
performance increase with that.

Your video card is a bit on the weak side for this game. It will run but
you won't be running it very high.

$60 CAN.. for a DVDburner ware the thing out.. if it dies in a year are you
REALLY going to be disappointed?

For as expensive as RDRAM is... if I were you I'd consider selling your
RDRAM/mobo for a few bucks (ebay) and swap out the mobo and your other
equipment for a new one that accepts regular RAM.

You'd have to make sure any new mobo meets your needs and accepts your CPU.

We are running it on a PIV 2.4, ATI X800XL, 1 gig ram, audigy sound card
(original) and the only thing not running is anti-ailiasing. Looks and
sounds great.

It runs fine on my system :

P4 2.8, 2gig pc3200ram, all-in-wonder 9600 (I think this is what's
letting me down). It runs fine usually but every now and then it slows
down to maybe 1 or .5FPS (maybe once an hour) and I'm running 640x480
with everything turned off..

I'm going to try and tweak my system a little tonight (close running
tasks, remove some stuff, defrag, maybe overclock, disable my second
monitor (dual head card)). But your system should run it OK
