I have been thinking of starting a new hunter and conteplated his role
in things. I was thinking of trying something completly new for me, a
melee hunter. I know its been done before (like the 70 hunter on the
EU servers that has never fired a range weapon), so it's nothing new.
I will probably use a range weapon though, but I rather focus on
melee. I don't have the amazing gear (right now) that guy has. It's
just seems that the survival tree is fairly unappreciated. I was
thinking of going Sur/BM, sticking with a fast attack pet, and just
dps'ing as much as I can while solo leveling. I just need to pick a
race. I am toggling between Tauren (extra health and slam) or Orc (+5%
pet dam). Ideas, comments, concerns?

If you really want to do this I'd go Orc. Axe skill will help with
melee dps and the stun resistance will be nice since alot of mobs stun
when in melee range. In addition Blood Fury will add a significant
amount of DPS along w/ Pet Mastery.

My concern is you are rolling a ranged class to do melee damage, it
just doesn't make alot of sense. You have a total of 5 melee
offensive spells (Raptor Strike, Mongoose Strike, Immolation Trap and
Explosive Trap, Wing Clip (offensive or defensive, although I doubt
any class will run from a melee hunter)). You are severly gimping
yourself with this choice.

Thanks for the point of view. I think you are right, Orc might be a
better choice than tauren.

As far as gimping myslef, its more of a personal challenge. I had a
lvl 80 melee sorc in diablo II just because I knew it didn't fit the
standard mold.

I'll probably go with either a fast attacking pet (raptor? maybe) or a
boar (love charge).
I know what you mean about only having 5 melee offensive spells but on
average I try to keep my rotation short on some of my characters
anyway. There are far too many times I have a UI full of spells I
hardly ever use.

not familiure with Blood Fury (don't play many orcs) , what does it
do?

At level 70 Blood Fury will increase your attack power by 300 +/- a
few points and reduce all healing you recieve by 50% for 15 seconds.
It costs no mana to activate.

On my 68 Orc I stack this with Beastial Wrath and a trinket and my DPS
almost doubles, it is insane.
