I have not intentionally stolen anything yet... Playing a straight-laced
character. But about 3 times now (over several days), a guard has come up to
me and made me pay a fine and "give up my stolen goods" It never shows what
I stole, and once I pay the fine, I can't look into my inventory to find
out. FYI, I know about the cursor turning red if something isn't okay to
take. (Huge improvement over Morrowind there!)
Is there a known glitch, or is it just too easy to pick other people's stuff
up?
Once this seemed to occur shortly after I took a piece of gold from a chest
in the "Inn of Ill Omen". But, the cursor did NOT turn red for the chest.
Could it be that the chest was okay to rummage through, but that one piece
of gold was spoken for? >> Stay informed about: Am I stealing stuff? |

If you look in your inventory, items that are stolen will show up with
a red hand next to them (just like the one that shows up when the
cursor hovers over somebodies property). >> Stay informed about: Am I stealing stuff? |

IIRC guards will also talk about taking away stolen goods if they arrest
you for anything else, e.g. trespassing. >> Stay informed about: Am I stealing stuff? |

One thing that I've run into in the past is if somebody spots you
reading an owned item. Even if you don't pick it up, you can be left
with +1 'items stolen' and a bounty of 1.

No, if the chest is OK, the gold is too.

Never made sense to me.. How is any self respecting book merchant ever
supposed to make any money if you aren't allowed to peruse the wares?

What is "Grab Mode"? And, how do you put stuff on a table?
I have been annoyed that I can't seem to do that even with my own stuff...
Any time I drop anything, it just kind of spews out randomly from me. Lame
compared to Morrowind. Is there some "mode" that brings back the ability to
put stuff where you want it?
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: Am I stealing stuff? |

When you highlight an object, hold down 'Z' to pick it up and have it 'hang'
on your cursor instead of entering your inventory. Let go of Z to drop it
into place.
When dropping items out of your inventory, instead of shift-clicking, hold
down the mouse button over the item and it will appear 'hanging' on your
cursor. You can then position it and let go.
Not that either of these methods is incredibly precise - but with a great
deal of care, you can have objects end up basically where you want them.

Thanks! This will really help with some frustrations I was having... Guess I
should have read the manual a little more carefully. >> Stay informed about: Am I stealing stuff? |

I noticed that as well last night. I can only imagine I've "stolen"
~500 pieces of gold from abandoned homes and the bodies of formerly
vibrant bandits. I'm such a bad monk.

I hit something wierd yesterday, having just started the game.
I bumped into a table in an inn, knocking around a bunch of
items that were on it, and suddenly everyone starts shouting
"thief!" the same as if I had used grab mode.

Were they yelling at you? There are other thieves and pickpockets in
the game. You see people slouching around and the next thing you know a
guard is chasing some poor idiot through the streets.
Another thing that happens to me is when I try to talk to a bartender
or merchant over a counter, and I accidentally use the action key on an
item sitting in front of the character instead of the character
themselves. Next thing you know, the Hero of Kvatch is standing in a
pile of bodies.
