I made some of these for my pet and he ate them with no problem but now the
"your pet doesn't like that food" thig comes up. Does this food go bad or is
it only usable in certain zones or is my cat just turning finicky? My owl
won't eat it either.

Are you sure you're using it correctly? Going by the item text, it looks
like *you* eat it, and the buff goes on your pet. I don't think you're
supposed to feed it to your pet like normal food.

The Sporeling Snack is a " USE " item. Click the item in your bag, and
it casts a buff onto your pet. You do not have to have your pet
targeted and you can not buff another player's pet.
For hunter's, do not use your Pet Feed ability with this item, as your
pet doesn't eat it like other food for your pet.

There also a higher level pet-buff snack, avaible via a random reward
from doing the cooking daily quest:
Kibler's Bits
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=33874;source=live
This one functions the same as the Sporeling Snack.

You're not. But you don't eat it either. You just use it, like a potion
or a bandage or a bomb.

You don't feed them to your pet in the usual way, just right
click on the sporeling snack. This is a user interface
inconsistency probably due to some difficulty in having the
feed pet effect add a buff to your pet, so it's done as
a generic "use this thing" right click.

Thought of another reason why sporeling snacks don't
get fed to pets the same way - warlock can also use them
on their pets, and warlocks don't have a "feed pet" command.

This all seems really counter-intuitive.

Hunter's are used to feeding their pets. They've been doing it since
level 10 (and if they haven't, they probably no longer have a pet to
not feed). So you hand them an item that when "fed to their pet"
buffs the pet. So a hunter would most likely do what comes natural,
cast feed pet and click the item, only for nothing to happen.

Warlock's on the other hand have never had any need to feed their pet,
and Consume Shadows, Health Funnel, and Mana Feed don't count as
feeding. You hand them an item that when "fed to their pet" buffs the
pet, and I bet most warlocks say "feed my pet, I'm not a hunter" and
dismiss the item as hunter only.

Its only after reading the tooltip a little more carefully do people
see that its an on use item, and not actually something that uses any
specific class abilities.

Be thankful for that, it's a relatively recent change which made sporeling
snacks and kibler's bits taste bad when fed to pets. You used to be able to
waste them by feeding your pet with them, to no effect. *
