| At present I have a Soundblaster live value . Want to upgrade but don't
know if a new card will work on win98se op sys. The SB audigy2 and 4
don't list win98se as a sys requirement. Will it work anyway? Anyone
find that it wont?

Stocky, you can make an Audigy2 work in 98, but it involves some effort.
Essentially there are some driver's you DON'T install. I don't recall how I
did it before (I moved on to XP several years ago) but if you'll do some
googling, you can find the newsgroup postings where I described it to
someone else... it'll be about two years ago if you need to narrow the time
frame in the advanced section...

That is interesting , unusual, and odd. "Don't install"????) I am
imagining clicking on "install" and the rest is automatic. I can't
envision how someone would even KNOW how not to install a driver or how
you could stop the installation from installing something once you
click install.
Only way is if the install stopped and gave you an option of not
installing something. Anyway, thanx for the answer- since I have an
ebay bid on an audigy2 and so far am close to winning the auction for
it, I may have no choice but to pay for it if I can't get released from
it. I did a lot of research before bidding but not enough. I think I
would have been better off bidding on the audigy4 or xfi version- if
they would work on se in the same way. There are so many variations of
this stuff that it can get very confusing. I am still not sure what the
platinum versions means compared to the plain vers. Speaking to people
at Best Buy today did not help. They don't know what they are talking
about either- Terms like "luxury" model or more features is just hot
air from them. The best they can do is read the box like I can. The
hot air from them is nice on a cold day, but that is the extent of it. >> Stay informed about: sound card help needed |

Not to post an obvious response, but why exactly is it that you're still
running 98? I have found XP to be the most stable and game-friendly OS
I've used to date. In its day, sure, 98SE was the shizzit, but what sim
are you still running that can't be accomodated with XP (even in 98
emulation mode)?

To be soecific, an empl. AND the department mgr. side by side- and then
another one a little latter. Usually, they at least do have a few
clues. In this case, they were about as dumb about the very few cards
they now carry (at least at the store I was at) that anyone can get. On
top of that, I got a steaming pile of bs from them. I went to get info
and got a total waste of my time. Sometimes when I go for info I end up
buying if I think it a good idea. >> Stay informed about: sound card help needed |

I searched and searched but could not find it or any explaination on
how to do it- however I could see many other posts discussing an audigy
working on win98. I still have the winning bid but at least I now know
if I win the auction that it worked for others besides you. That puts
my mind at ease about getting it. If I end up with it I will go deeper
into it if doesn't work with a straight forward install. I still think
I would have been better off with the audigy4 instead of the 2 model-
the xfi is just too expensive and not needed by me.

While I am still not exactly sure of the procedures you mention, it
does give me a good idea of what is involved and I appreciate your
opinion of the end results on 98se. I also wonder if the kx project
drivers mentioned in Mitch's answer would make a difference and make it
feasable to use audigy2 with win98se? I am dl those drivers now in case
I end up with the card.
Anyone done that? and how did it work if you did? I am still resisting
an op sys upgrade, it does move me in the xp direction based on all of
the opinions and feedback I am getting on it.
On another note, I tried "Dos Box" to try and run some older games but
that didn't work out. A very small window and unacceptable frame rates
with long pauses between frames. To increase frame rates I would have
to have decreased the window to "postage stamp" size. Deleted it as not
a viable way to do it.
While all this may end up a monumental waste of time, still it is worth
a try and an entertaining way to pass time.
Worst that can happen is I end up with a great sound card and end up
going with xp. Who knows? I may end up liking the newer op sys?

Stocky, that refreshes my memory... It was the WDM drivers that were the
problem. Also, without them, you lose some of the functionality of the
card...
At one point, I had two hardware configurations set up that I would bounce
between; on board audio for games that suffered bad stuttering with the WDM
drivers (CFS2 springs to mind) and the Audigy2 that I would use for
listening to audio files. I'd routed some extension cables for the sound to
the front of the box and would change where the speakers were plugged in to
fit whatever I was doing.
I highly recommend upgrading to XP... It solved a lot of problems...
