From this month's GFW mag (feature article):
----
Yes, Unreal Tournament, like its cinematic younger brother Gears of War,
will now set out to tell a story. No, seriously.
How, exactly, does a game created for the purpose of online competition end
up focused on loner play? Apparently, multiplayer mayhem was never Unreal's
big draw. "In our research, we found -- through checking CD keys -- that
more than half of the players that buy the title never go online. They just
play at home by themselves," says Jim Brown, UT3's soft-spoken lead level
designer.
----
There you have it, folks. Even in the world of arena FPS, where competitive
deathmatching is the rule of the day, the majority of players prefer to go
it alone. Maybe now there's sufficient cause for MMO designers to rethink
their strategy of catering primarily to hardcore clans and guilds. >> Stay informed about: Think soloing in a MMORPG is strange? |

I think LotRO's devs have already realized it--it's by far the most
solo-friendly MMO I've played.

You can also pick up the current PC Gamer (with DVD edition) and you'll find
a code inside, as well as the base game files on the DVD... Saves a little
bit of downloading, but not sure how much in the grand scheme of things.
Also has a handy keyboard guide to get you started.

It is fun--just about every issue I've had regarding what for me have been
killer issues in every MMO I've played have been eliminated or reduced in
LotRO. That doesn't mean I won't get aggravated by something down the road,
but after 4 months or so of total play in closed/open beta I'm still way
hyped over the game, and every other MMO I've played--even CoH/CoV which I
actually enjoyed for a bit--I've not been able to tolerate longer than for
two month stretches.
And if you're as much a Tolkien fan as it sounds like you are, you'll feel
right at home--trust me.

Condom - interesting analogy.
Quake 3 had a handicap feature I believe. A player could set their own
handicap which would make them spawn with less health, equal to the
handicap value. Whatever happened to this idea?

One advantage of class-based team games such as Battlefield, Enemy
Territory or Team Fortress, is that there are classes which are suited
for different skill levels. The medic class in each of these games is
always the easiest to play, as the ability to regenerate your health is
quite useful. On the other hand, a straight soldier class can rack up a
lot of kills and make things quite messy for the enemy, provided they
can stay alive, which is where experience comes in. It's all a good
variety, which I think makes things a lot easier than something like
Counter-Strike. >> Stay informed about: Think soloing in a MMORPG is strange? |

Have you ever been to a face to face with Unreal players? Worst
collection of malcontents, drug users, and high school drop outs I have
ever witnessed. I remember thinking "If only someone would crash a plane
into that building we could solve all our problems with jail over
crowding, welfare state, and illegal drugs."
For that matter, a lot of online RPG'rs fit that same mold.
Not that I think I am that sane, more like I don't feel twisted enough
to fit in. >> Stay informed about: Think soloing in a MMORPG is strange? |

Elendilmir, which is the one it seems like most here are using. The two
cnames I'm playing right now are Morwenreth and Eledhril.

LOL! You can only have a first name to start with (limited to 12-15 chars,
no spaces/punctuation chars), but can get a family name at 16th after retail
release I believe. 1st names have to be unique for now - dunno if that
changes with a family name tacked on. I've reserved Nostromo on 6 serves
already )) - my human LM will used in next on Elendilmir; I also have
Braveheart for my hobbit burglar when I get around to playing him . I
could probably sell that on Ebay for a tidy sum he he.

Well, as I hear it the RPG was only a genre because of the limitations
of technology at the time. RPGs were really trying to be FPSs all
along. "RPG - The Accidental Genre." - markB 24/3

Zag, it's probably been posted here at least a hundred times that only if
you preordered the game you could play the open beta before April 6. I've
probably posted that half that much myself . . . well, maybe not quite
*that* much, but a lot. At any rate, it's already April 4.
