If the boulder is in the row with the pits, you want to kill the
monsters so you can use the buolder to fill the pit. If it in
in the row after the pits, you want to 1) figure out how the
boulder got there (or is it a mimic) so you don't make that
mistake again, and 2) figure out what you did to wake up
all of th emonsters so you don't make that mistake again.
Far better to arrive in that room with them all asleep so you
can dispatch them one by one carefully chosing the ones that
don't make noise and finally taking out the few noisy ones last.

If you run out of rocks and the monsters are still alive, you
din't carry 250+ rocks with you for the purpose. ;^). The
mines are an infinite supply of rocks, and the statues on the
oracle level almost as plentiful/

Teleporting it could have it end up in the last row between you
and the prize. I mentioned that possibility above. In that case
breaking it will be necessary. All luck issues can be cured at
an altar.
