I enjoyed HL2, but I felt rushed through the game, and you couldn't
sneak/stealth your way through.

Stalker was fun, but it really wasnt much of a stealth game.

The Thief series was great, replayed em too many times to replay
anymore.

Splinter Cell series was fun.

Even FarCry was fun in the jungle at least, though the enemies
pinpointing where your gunfire came from was a bit much, and though
they never left the area once you got their attention , you could
still stealth around in the undergrwoth so that was enjoyable.

I really just enjoy these types because you can take your time,
there's no rush to finish the level, even though they are linear, to
me I prefer these types of games over run-n-gun FPS.

I hope more games come out like these in the future.

You played the 400+ good fan missions for Thief 2? Some of those are
better than any of the original missions.

You haven't mentioned the Hitman series!! It's all about stealth, and
there are no time limits. Pick up Hitman2 for $5 somewhere and give it a
try (it is nominally a 3rdperson game, but has a fps mode also). There was
also another spy/jamesbond-type game that used the tribes? engine.

It could have been but they totally balsed up the AI so they would instantly
know where you were after you loaded a save game.

Come on, all you need to do is regard this as a 'savepoint' issue, and
schedule your saves for when you are outside of the various 'triggerpoints'.
This is *not* a dealbreaker by any means.

Why did Thief 3 never have the same level of fan support? Last time I checked
it was a good couple of years after the game had been released and there were
still only a handful of missions.

True I suppose but if you really want to play it that way, later on in the
game where there are large underground sections its almost impossible to save
far enough away from enemies to stop them detecting you. In the Sarcophagus
for instance I had Monolith troops firing at me that were two rooms away! I
guess my point is that even after multiple patches they still never managed to
squash this bug. I will be looking for a demo for the next game first I think
but from what I have read about the prequel it has promise.

The phrase "big time rationalization" comes to mind here.

If the game wants a savepoint mechanism, be upfront and implement a
savepoint mechanism. (And I don't think savepoint limitations are really
compatible with Thief-style stealthy gameplay.)

If the game offers a save anywhere feature, it should work correctly. Game
restores that "change history" do not engender trust.

Or download the Hitman series for free from Gametap.

Try Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's a FPS/RPG but you can play
it very sneaky!

Have you tried Crysis yet? Anytime I get annoyed with fighting I
just turn on cloak mode and sneak through the worst parts Smile.

Agree with most of that to be honest. But some of these could be sorted by the
level designer, respawning for one. I don't know what the limits are map size
but the small maps for the OC were because of its console heritage of course
but that doesn't necessarily mean that map designers would have to stick to
these limits. Not sure about the rest though. I don't remember ever having an
enemy lean his head into my "club". Smile

I liked Thief 3 for what it was, you can't beat 'the Shalebridge Cradle'
for atmosphere, although I still play all 3 over or with user mods every
now and again.

The question isn't whether they can be worked around, it's what's the
incentive for doing so given that Thief 2 exists, doesn't have all the above
mentioned disadvangates as well as the disadvantage of having to learn a new
engine and editing toolset.

I'm with you. Most people I know who said "Thief 3 sucked" never
actually played it. They just went with the "common misconception".
