Does the skill level affect experience?

I play with the bar about 4 clicks less than half. My nephew plays
with it all the way to easy. It still seems like I am leveling up
before he is.

I don't know the actual algorithms but it sounds reasonable.
It's unlikely he'll get as much experience in offensive and
defensive skills if he's dropping opponents with one or two
blows.
