The SNES created the "eject" button. I've heard over the years back in
the early-mid 90's that pulling a SNES cartridge out damages the
game/system. What makes the Genesis and SNES slots different?
Obviously Sega didn't see the need for an eject button, and pulling out
a GEN game is perfectly fine (and also mandatory).

I've never pulled out an SNES title -- since the eject button is there.
However, a bud of mine once did and said it was a lot harder to remove
than a GEN title. Has there ever been an official word on this
"debate"?

When you're pulling it out manually, you're likely pulling at an angle
(albeit a slight one) and will need to exert a significant amount of
force to get the cartridge loose from the contacts.

Get a bad angle or pull out games enough times and you're bound to
damage something, whether it's the contacts or the metal base around
them or whatever.

The eject button always pushes the cartridge straight up (the optimal
angle) and frees it from the contacts. You are then free to pull it the
rest of the way out with a minimum of force thus reducing the risk of
damage.

Buh? If this a first iteration SNES thing? My SNES, the only one I've
ever owned, is the newer type, and I've never known of an eject button.
Which, I suppose, doesn't mean there isn't one there...

Yes, only the original SNES has the eject button. The later redesigned SNES
does not have one.

the snes had a wider slot maybe they thought people would yank at one
angle or another and have it torque fracture the top case of the snes
but i think it was more of a convieniece feature then a safety and the
newer games had extra contacts and may have been a strain for a 4 year
old jerk out barney to put in barbie

the genesis cartriges had fingergrooves in the back of most which
makes pulling them out easier

If nothing else, Nintendo, maybe, found it amusing to release the SNES
like that so people bored with PilotWings could hit the eject button as
hard as they could, thus launching the game across the room and into
the catbox. Wink Hell, I know I did...

if you want to really launch it you just need a good ballpeen hammer

just for reference i was measuring from the deck to the bottom of the
cart "the contacts area"

now what we really need is a contest to see how far you can launch a
game genie with supergameboy with gameshark and pokemon pinball
