The stuff I used to use was Radio Shack part 44-1113, which is a pure
isopropanol solution they use for cleaning tape heads. Unfortunately,
Radio Shack stopped being cool some time after the mobile phone companies
bought their loyalty, and besides which they stopped carrying reel-to-reel
tape maintenance stuff. If you're lucky, your local Shack has some left
over from the good old days for about $5 per 4 oz. bottle.
MCM Electronics sells an eight ounce bottle of an equivalent Chemtronics
solution for about $10, which should last you until the Playstation 6 hits
the market. Here's a handy link:

MCM used to be cooler too, but at least they're honest about when they're
out of stock on stuff. Hope that helps you out.

I use standard off-the-shelf isopropyl rubbing alcohol all the time
for games
that need a quick cleaning. This certainly removes dirt, sticky stuff,
ink, etc.
It does not, however, remove deoxidization. The stuff I got online is
kind of
like a milky substance that dries quickly. Does a good job of getting
rid
of corrosion and deoxidization. Another trick I learned is to rub
with pencil eraser.
The bottom line is I averaged $4 a week on q-tips over a 3 year
period

Can't you just use regular rubbing alcohol that you'd get off the shelf
in the pharmacy section of just about anywhere? I swear that's what's
been in the last few cleaning kits I had bought.

Technically, that stuff is partly water. As long as you let the cartridges
dry completely, then there's no danger of corrosion. However, unless
you've got some sort of high-resolution moisture scanner or you're willing
to wait 24 hours after cleaning a cartridge, I defy you to tell me when
the cartridge contacts are actually dry. It's worth the extra money to me
to use a cleaner that's got no water and evaporates thoroughly.
I'll admit that I'm being more paranoid than most. You're talking to a guy
who not only cleans cartridge contacts, but cartridge SLOT contacts too.
I'm nutty that way.

Just be sure to check the ingredients very carefully.
I once bought a bottle of CVS rubbing alcohol, and in checking the
ingredients afterwards it also contained Acetone. Tossed it out, bought some
rubbing alcohol from Longs instead. So, make sure that any rubbing alcohol
only contains Isopropyl Alcohol (also can appear as Isopropanol). >> Stay informed about: Is there an off-the-shelf solution for cleaning cartridges? |

I clean the cartridge slots as well, but usually only about once a year.
I clean every used game I get, with the rubbing alcohol and just sort of
leave it at that. I can understand the hesitation, but I've done alright
doing it this way for quite a while now. Still, it's something to keep
in mind, as I have, on occasion, been so excited to play a game that I
know I didn't let it dry completely.

Good to know, I'll keep that in mind the next time I need a refill.
Thanks,
