Cheat protection:

What is everybody using these days? I did a little googling and I came up
with a couple of things. It seems that there are some package validators
that have taken over as the preferred method of cheat protection... but I've
discussed my feelings about the possibilities of nefarious use of such
things before... and my reading indicates that these are not linux-client
friendly. - Anyone who can enlighten me will have my thanks.

Further, my reading also indicates that UTPure and CHSP are not rightly
friendly with matrix moves, but I see a few matrix servers either or. So,
that makes me wonder how its done. Can anyone share with me how they are
running matrix moves and cheat protection?

Thismay not be of huge importance due to the fact the server will be going
straight DM no mods in a week or two, but then, I'm also considering running
two servers. I have about a spare meg of upload bandwidth to play with so
I'm thinking of running a pair (one with the matrix moves mod etc for my
local buddies and a straight DM server because that's what I prefer to play)
and giving them each 512. If I leave the Matrix Moves server public, then
I'll probably want some cheat protection on it.

So far as I know (and I haven't followed it in a few months) the validators
are the way to go for solid protection. Last I read on it there were no
public cheats that weren't dealt with. I'm with you though on the whole
"let's take a peek into your hard drive" thing. I'm simply amazed that there
wasn't a rash of servers set up and used as gateways to either spread things
or to collect information. I've been really busy this past year with some
issues concerning our local union but I've told myself for some time that
I'd set aside a weekend and prove to myself that getting into a computer
logged in your server is possible through these methods.

Well I don't have any problems connecting to any of the servers that I try.
Admittedly it's not very often these days but still...
When I connect to the Truff servers I get a brief message saying something
like ".....not checking due to incompatible os....." but then it connects
and plays fine.
If there is a particular server you want me to try.......

Note: Not an anticheat guru.

I *think* most of them now either support linux, or just plain don't
check linux clients. UTDC (installable package checker) just ignores
linux and mac clients, even if it's command of the english language is dire:

[UTDC] Player: 11 is not being checked because of uncompatible OS

"Me fail English? That's unpossible!"

Pure is not compatible with Monsterhunt either, and on some normal
gametypes featuring monsters. CTF-Skytitans, MH-Assassination and some
other maps that do strange things often result in players being kicked
for "BadLighting" because Pure doesn't understand about the monsters.

Simple workaround: Don't use Pure. IIRC, UTDC doesn't have these issues,
but misses some things that Pure catches.

CSHP is obsolute btw. Pure took over a couple of years ago.

Anthchecker is another current package checker with some nice features.
It's that one that can be configured to tell the players on the server
what OS/renderer you are using when you join.

In ALL cases, admin presence and a moderate sense of paranoia is your
best defence against cheaters of any flavour. You might consider joining
the anticheat cluster if you can fulfil their requirements (I forget
what they are atm - #anticheat on quakenet)
