I think the XBOX 360 is a terrific system but it suffers from one most
annoying graphic anomalies. Most of the games display some form of screen
tear. Ghost Recon, Madden etc. look great but the images are ruined by this
effect. I think that this visible "breakup" of screen images is more
distracting than poor graphics or slow frame rate. Does this seem to bother
anyone else out there? Why don't the developers enable vsync and eliminate
this very annoying distraction? >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

He's talking about the lack of vertical sync. Pc games let you force
vertical sync so you don't get that. Not sure if it's certain games or
all games on 360 that do it. Doesn't bother me even on a 52" screen >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

Well, if its the same as tearing on a pc game, its caused when the framerate
exceeds the screen refresh rate. So, if you are playing the games in
progressive scan, it would mean the framerate is >60fps. On a pc, you could
just enable Vsync, but you probably don't have that option on the x360. Not
sure there is anything to be done about it...

screen tearing is evil

It's all about the monitor. CRT's are less likely to suffer from tearing due
to refresh issues, whereas LCD's and Plasma's are more likely to exhibit
this condidition. Either way, I would think that the X360 would default to
that because it's not like a PC where you're trying to eek out more frames
due to the wide variety of video cards and CPU's to play games. The X360
should be capped at 60Hz, fast enough to eliminate stuttering or smearing,
but slow enough to prevent tearing. >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

I haven't noticed this. Maybe your TV is not up to snuff? >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

Tearing has nothing to do with the response time. If an lcd has a low
response time, the image will ghost, but it won't tear. For example, if an
lcd has a 25ms response time, it can display a maximum of (1000/25=40)
frames per second, but the refresh rate will still be 60Hz. Even though lcds
aren't affected by refresh rate, the image in this case will tear if >60fps
and will ghost if >40fps.

I checked to see if the tearing issue is isolated to one specific TV set.
Using Ghost Recon as the source I can still see tearing on a Hitachi 57"
rear projection HDTV, a Sharp Aqous 32" flat screen LCD HDTV and a Panasonic
32" standard CRT TV. This does not occur with all games but is definitely
noticeable in this demonstration. >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

I've got about 8 games for the 360. It's amazing how well a game like Need
for Speed Underground works graphically, but then Blazing Angels tears like
there's no tomorrow!
Maybe XBOX 360 V2 w/ HD-DVD, HDMI and the smaller core won't have the
problem. Sigh. >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |

Yeah, you're right. I noticed it with GRAW too. I remember when they
used that technique on Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. I couldn't
stand it then but lived with it because they were squeezing every last
bit of CPU out of the Xbox. I don't understand why they need to do
that on the 360 at the beginning of its life cycle. There should be
enough power to spare.
BTW, I'm seeing it on a CRT HDTV, so go figure. >> Stay informed about: What's with the screen tear on the 360 |
