My wife used to be an avid Star Wars: Galaxies player and she says
it's the same thing there: entire planets are "ghost towns". She
loved the game when it was a sort of sandbox where you could pretty
much play as you wanted to. A while back SoE revamped SW:G to try to
make it more like WoW, and that pretty much put the nail in the
coffin.
It's really too bad, because instead of trying to make SW:G a WoW
clone SoE should have touted the differences and attracted the players
who weren't in to a WoW-style MMO. >> Stay informed about: Just sad |

I was interested in starting that one myself, but it was around the
time they did the big screw-up you refer to
I gave Eve Online a try and I enjoyed that as a change from the
"swords 'n sorcery" stuff. The steep learning curve and the lack of
ways to twink out and be Uber in 4 weeks really put the munchkins off,
which is a definite plus

And that's the key I think, critical mass is gone. There's probably still
loads of people lurking, but without a critical mass of content
originators, nothing happens.

If you want to compare it against other games of that age, try Diablo2
(released in early 2000)
Threads for april... (spam included, sorry too much work omitting it)
alt.game.diablo2=139
alt.games.everquest=23
and thats not counting the separate threads in alt.games.diablo which are
diablo2 related.
But feel free to keep defending eq/soe and insulting me if it makes you feel
better. >> Stay informed about: Just sad |

I just read through all the posts, and I didnt see anyone who claims to be a
wow player, so Im not sure where you get that one from.
I was just having a dig at the fanbois who tell everyone to leave, and then
get their wish ... in spades.
As someone else pointed out, this is happening in WOW too, which I think is
probably losing more people than its gaining right now. >> Stay informed about: Just sad |

Theres too much griefing in EVE. (under the guise of roleplaying)
My hopes are pinned on Hellgate:london right now. I need another MMO but I'm
tired of MMO's that require guilds/clans to achieve anything. I had a gutful
of guilds when I was playing WOW (also when I played EQ) and the associated
politics that seem inseparable from them. >> Stay informed about: Just sad |

With the Burning Crusade released, I'd be surprised if WoW is losing
people right at this moment in time. Not to say that it's always
going to be growing or always going to be the biggest game, but BC has
gotten rave reviews, and everyone I've talked to is enjoying it. If
someone was going to leave, I think they would have left in December,
not in May. According to a Blizzard press release:
"Blizzard previously announced that this first expansion set for World
of Warcraft sold through nearly 2.4 million copies worldwide in its
first 24 hours -- more than any other PC game in history had sold
within an entire first month of availability."
Doesn't sound like a game that's losing players to me... >> Stay informed about: Just sad |

Aye, I know what you mean about politics in Guilds. What a pain in
the frickin' ass it can be. Some RL pals (some I have known for about
25 to 30 years) and I made a guild just for the 6 of us, partly to
eliminate the whining "sign my charter" whispers and partly just to
chat on Teamspeak and help each other out on a "when we can" basis.
It works absolutely great. We don't recruit anyone either, so we get
zero politics.
I must have a look at this Hellgate you mention
