Folks,

Can anyone tell me if I will be able to run the NetHack port on a new
PSP (before I part with my cash)? From what I have been reading, it
only worked with older firmware revisions and as I am looking to buy
new, it'll probably not be old firmware.

Any help appreciated!

I was interested in getting a PSP for that exact reason, too. However,
like you said, the CURRENT implementation of Nethack requires almost
the oldest possible firmware version on the PSP.

Furthermore, from what I have been able to uncover, you are almost
forcibly coerced by Sony to upgrade your firmware in order to run some
of the newer software, and you CAN'T ever roll back your firmware
version once you have upgraded it - meaning, even if you find an old
one in a pawn shop, you may still be screwed trying to find one with
old firmware.

(I may be wrong - these things could have changed in the past few
months)

So, for now, unless someone has a new crack for the PSP, you can't run
Nethack unless you have an old, un-upgraded PSP, and the new PSP's all
have the most recent versions installed.

Hope this helps, and you haven't spent the money yet! And if I am
totally wrong, I would love to hear - I would buy a PSP, too, if I
could reliably get Nethack to run on it.

It is worth having one for far more reasons than ANY game that may
or may not be played on it.

It plays MP3s and stores you favorite collection of photos, any of
which can be made the background image for the PSP.

It plays movies, and a UMD version of the movie isn't required. I
can rip ANY DVD I own and make a file that I can watch the movie on
the PSP with.

It has wireless networking, which allows me to get online anywhere
there is an access point that is unsecured, or free.

The only thing bad is that the memory stick are not cheap, and you
have to erase a lot of stuff (have a clean stick) to put a movie file
onto one. A four GB stick costs almost as much as the PSP itself.

I haven't tried it yet, but supposedly, this software I have will
let me run any of the old firmware required games. I have yet to try
it, and am a little leery of it. I was going to wait around for the
kids to declare the software hack viable or a device breaker before I
become a statistic.

that is interesting, what software is that?

BTW, I have not brought the PSP yet but have a friend with one and he
uses the photo slideshow feature with keylock to keep his young
daughter quiet for an hour's extra kip ~ that is probably worth the
cost alone!

And the 2GB sticks are not too expensive now, just buy a couple of
those instead of 4GB and keep the change...

Thanks for the feedback anyway!
