I have a feeling it's because I'm using the open source Xorg
nv module for my Nvidia 6600GT card instead of the
closed Nvidia proprietary one. The Xorg basic module
is really handy because I don't have to recompile or install
the Nvidia one each time I update my kernel, but it's really
slow at certain graphics (opengl screen savers crawl on it).
A guy at work also suggested I just install xmame via rpm package for my
particular distro instead of compiling xmame from scratch. I
did the compile figuring the code would run faster
that way since I can tailor the cpu arch at compile time.
I'll try all these and see what works out.
