I'm a newbie to Champions...using the "big blue book" for rules...and
my son wants to create a character...based loosely on the Forgotten
Realms "god" named "Mask". One of the main things about Mask is that
he constantly changes shapes, on purpose and sometimes seemingly
involuntarily. His shapes don't have much game advantage (other than
disguises) as his stats, etc will stay the same. This is primarily an
advantage for disguises.
Any ideas on what powers to use to simulate this?
Also, does anyone know of a good resource for understanding the Hero
system combat rules or character generation? It would be great to read
a mock battle or character generation discussion to learn how it all
fits together before I run a game.
Thanks in advance

Shapeshift, any shape, No Conscious Control (-2)
Active Cost 30, Real Cost 10

Either way, I hate you Count Chocula, if I didn't already.

If the only game advantage is that his disguises are really good, I'd just buy
the Disguise skill up to ridiculous levels. A 25- roll should be just about
impenetrable. In fifth edition I'd suggest looking at some of the adders to
Shape Shift.

Head over to the Hero Games website and search the message boards. There was
one thread with several phase-by-phase rundowns of fights between Mechanon and
the Champions, and I can't count the number of "critique this character"
threads.

I'd use Shape Shift (even more so in 5th edition).

You should get Sidekick -- it's for 5th edition, but it's only $10 and is
full of examples on character stuff.
Here is a link to the Hero Games forum which has some really good example
combats. One is Heroic level, one is superheros. Both are 5th edition but
there's not a huge difference.

The Champions vs. Mechanon thread is here:
http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18044
You might want to find "play by play" and start reading there, since part
of the beginning is taken up with picky stuff that's new to fifth edition.
And there are literally hundreds of example characters and discussion of
many of them, plus a board full of posters who are knowledgeable,
friendly, and creative.
There was a good thread on rpg.net recently (
http://rpg.net/showthread.php?t=133177 ) giving links to TONS of good Hero
resources. (Most threads on rpg.net about Hero are full of flames, but
this one never got too bad and had a high signal to noise ratio.)

Thing is, he has some control. Might be better done giving
him Shapeshift and "Accidental Change when not paying
attention".
