I found that Microsoft AntiSpyware loves to do this during scheduled scans.
I've moved the scan to 4 AM, but I've run into it still while playing my new
favorite MMORPG until 6 AM in the morning. I don't plan on playing that
late so I never disable it before going in to play. It gets a little
embarressing to tell (voice chat is great!) the members of my party to hold
on while I crash (not really a crash, but thats what it feels like) to the
desktop...stop tbe MS AntiSpyware scan...bring the game back up.
Also in my case the game seems to freeze, but its actually all the memory
hogging of the MMORPG. After a few seconds I can bring the game screen up
again.
So to make a long story short...disable any scheduled scans before you go in
to play your game of choice.
