LOL! Yes, it will. Haven't seen any chatter about the 'sequel' to
Awakening - Sherlock Holmes vs Arsene Lupin:

I've got it donwloaded but not installed as of yet, so can't really
comment on it.

I haven't heard of the new one on your above link. I haven't even played The
Awakened and don't think I will. Some people like it and some don't. Same
with review sites.

I just started it. My video card doesn't seem to be capable of running it
with the default settings, so I've had to turn some of them down. The game
engine is similar to the one in The Awakened. It has a horrible copy
"protection" on it which causes my poor DVD drive to spin up and down six
times before the game will start. I'm thinking of downloading a crack to
get rid of that. I don't want to wear out my drive for this one game. >> Stay informed about: Any recommendations for an Adventure game for a husband an.. |

Have you tried "The longest journey" from Funcom? I think it came out
around 2000. Received multiple awards: http://longestjourney.com/

Forgot about that one. Yes, The Longest Journey is a good game. The second
game in the series called "Dreamfall" wasn't as good according to quite a
few people. I didn't play it so can't comment.

I find better adventure game reviews at Gamespot than the usual
over-enthusiastic ones at adventure genre fan-sites.
Gamespot do give high scores to adventure games, even those that have
almost zero marketing and hype, when they think those games deserve
that. For example Culpa Innata got 7.5 from them, which is a very high
rating there. Awakened got even higher. Ankh also got a decent score.
Sam&Max and Secrets of the Ark were received very highly.
Below are their reviewed scores, going back to early 2005. You can
definitely see a pattern and when you read the reveiew you'll find
valid concerns.

Dreamfall was a very good game with a plot that was substantially
better than that of its predecessor. It did eventually fail to tie
even a single loose-end in the plot and this is its biggest weakness.
That is, it feels like a middle episode of a story that may never be
completed.
Ending a game without any resolution is quite a disservice to gamers,
when there is no gaurantee at all that the next game in the series
will be made. Longest Journey was better in that regard.
If you can live with such an ending, then Dreamfall offers a very
enjoyable 15-hour or so experience.

But you always have to keep in mind that much depends on the reviewer's
point of view and many people may not agree.
I've played quite a few of the above games, and I wouldn't agree with the
points given to quite a few of the above games.
For example: I would give Anacrapri 5. It wasn't as good as the first game
in that series. I was never a big fan of Sam and Max, so would not have
rated them as highly. Sacred Rings - I would give about a 6. Tunguska - I
agree. I really liked Keepsake and would give it an 8.5. Crime stories - I
agree. And Then there were none - would give 5.5. There are other games
listed above such as Myst Exile which I would give 8.0. I still think that
Gamespot is more into various games, action/action/adventure/combat and
don't they give reviews for games played on other game systems besides PC's.
In that way, if someone is mainly only interested in adventure game reviews
for the PC, adventure game sites are probably of more help to them . I
sometimes check Gamespot myself for adventure games, but I've always thought
*in general*, that they tend to give adventure games lower scores though not
always of course. Only my thoughts.

I understand, but folks in this thread were completely dismissing
Gamespot's reviews of adventure games, implying that only games with
marketing muscle or belonging to genres which interest Gamespot
editors get decent scores and reviews. That is completely incorrect,
as I showed by displaying a massive list of adventure titles that have
been reviewed since January 2005 at Gamespot. I also said Culpa Innata
got a very good rating, which is as low profile as a game can go. You
can also see a lot of adventure title getting very good scores.
Following their reviews you can easily see a pattern and understand
their reasons of giving certain scores - one that doesn't seem on the
surface to be influenced by game's hype or publisher's strength. Now,
like you, I may not agree with some of their scores but I really
appreciate that unlike most adventure-genre fansites they show less
tolerance for nonsensical and aimless gameplay designs.

<snipped some stuff I wrote in my previous message>
Mary said:
" There are other games listed above such as Myst Exile which I would give
8.0.
I made a mistake above. "Myst V: End of Ages" is on the game list not Myst
Exile. But I checked Gamespot and there is a Review of Myst Exile. It says
Gamespot Score 0.0 - what does that mean? 39 Other reviews and 15 Player
reviews both gave mostly high scores for Myst Exile.I thought Myst Exile was
the best of the Myst games that I played. I didn't play End of Ages and
started Myst IV, The Revelation but got bored and thought I might go back to
it sometime, (usually not a good sign), but so far, never did. Good thing it
was a used copy I bought
cheap..

Not agreeing with a review score doesn't mean an entire site is
useless. I posted scores for every game they have reviewed since Jan
2005, and you came back with a game release 11 years ago. What has
that got to do with this discussion and how does it make your earlier
blanket statement any valid ?
For the record, I also believe Ripper was a mediocre game. Not as bad
as the GameSpot review suggests but not good either.

Again, your claim has no bearing on reality. For the third time in
this thread, let me repeat that they gave Culpa Innata, one of their
best ratings, and that is in no way a high-budget or a hyped title.
You'll also see that in the list I posted, all the higher ranked
titles (7+) are point-and-click ones except Dreamfall and several of
those don't have a 3D real-time engine.
What Gamespot doesn't do is to give adventure games a free-hand and
relaxed criteria, just because it's a genre in trouble. They largely
review a game based on its merits and that's something I appreciate.
There will always be odd reviews which you won't agree with or some
that may even be factually wrong, but I am talking about a trend in
general.
My 2¢
