The reckoning HELP

I'm playing all those budget games I bought a while back and the Quake II
mission pack "The Reckoning" is one of those titles. The only problem is
that I am at a section in THE WASTE SIEVE where I am stuck (literally).

I'm at 2 valves covered with hatches. One hatch is opened and when I swim
through it takes me to a large opening with a fan on the bottom that pulls
me down. THere's a double pipe ahead of me that I believe I should climb
up, but I just can't get to it! If I use my rebreather I can last longer
and hold my place next to the pipes but I can't seem to make progress
upward. MEanwhile there are two 'Flyers' that are shooting at me just
above the water's surface (which are easy to kill). Can someone PLEASE tell
me what I'm doing wrong here?

You can climb the pipes, they work like the ladders.
