problem joining thieves guild

Yes, I've clicked on everything. I even went through the whole place,
staring at the floor, running back and forth in a sweeping pattern using
the keyboard, with the button held down, so I would hit on anything
unobvious or unseen.

At least I did that on the second floor, which is where it should be,
right? I was told to steal a strapless dress. I haven't swept the ground
floor like that, but I did go through it several times looking. Very
frustrating. Almost ready to start over, since I accidentally saved over
the file from before I got the letter. At least I'm still at the
beginning, only a few hours committed so far.
