Help...

When I try to install the Civ2 CD ROM on my computer, a window titled "16
bit Windows Subsystem" pops up and I get the following error message:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application."

I have Windows XP, not NT, and plenty of memory for CIV2. I have played it
on this computer before. What is going on?

Thanks.

XP is the next generation NT. You might want to search the microsoft
knowlege base for the error message. Actually, just use the XP help &
support which will search the KB for you Wink If you can't find anything, post
again and i might find time to look into it for you.

OK, I did find on the Microsoft Help Knowledge Base a whole section about
"Error Messages when you install or start an MS-DOS of 16 bit Windows-based
program", with instructions how to change my config.nt, autoexec.nt and
command.com files.

Having changed those files as instructed, now I receive the following error
message:
"The Win16 subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in
your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH."

OK, how do I do that? The Windows Help is vague here.

Thanks again.

I hope you have a backup of the original files.

I'm guessing you have a dos version of Civ2 and it doesn't like the NTFS
disk. That aside... and hoping you are keeping detailed notes of your
changes...

On second thought... after looking over some of the stuff i pulled up it
looks like you might have something wrong with the windows installation. You
should undo whatever you have done so far and read up on it more until you
understand what is going on. I don't even want to be involved in totally
screwing up your system.

When you search the help & support stuff, add XP as a search term to
eliminate some of the results from older versions of windows. Always look at
what version of windows the kbarticle is referring to.

I do, no worries...actually, the changes work just fine. Funny, I can play
every other old NT 16 bit windows game just fine...

Oh well, it works on another machine, and Civ3 works on this one....

Thanks anyway.

I don't believe there ever was a dos version of Civ 2. Somthing's
shafted with the OS. I'm running Civ 2 on this computer and it has
Windows Xp MCE 2005.
