The stores that did pre-orders, like GameStop, EBGames, etc. would phone
you when the console came in. You then had to pick up the console within
a day or two or it'd be sold to someone else.
Stores like Best Buy, WalMart, Kmart, Target, etc. did not do pre-orders
and made their customers stand in line for 10+ hours so they could buy one.
IMHO, pre-ordering a console is just not worth it. The stores usually
make you buy one of their bundle deals which often contains games or
accessories you don't want or need. Many also make you put down 100%, up
front, in cash - meaning that they get to sit on your money (and the interest
it makes!) for the next 6-7 months. And, in the case of the 360, Microsoft
cut their initial shipment in half meaning roughly 50% of the people who
had put down their money back in May/June of 2005 had NOTHING to show for
it even after the console got released.
There's a good chance that the PS3 will have similar supply issues that
both the PS2 and 360 had. Really, if you can wait until February/March of
2007, you'll probably be better off.
