I was wanting to recreate the Matrix (from the Transformers, not the
movie with Neo) in the Champions RPG, and I needed to list all it's
powers.
In the TV show it seems to be a receptical of knowledge of all the
Autobots who carried it. It also can reformat Cybertonians into more
powerful forms who can utilize it, it can activate Vector Sigma and it
can destroy the hate plague. It is also handy for blowing up giant
killer robot planets who are about to eat you.
In the Marvel comic book it could grank sparks/sentience to lifeless
robots, be used to telekinetically mechanical parts, could bring back
the dead. It also let Starscream merge with a giant planet ship. It was
more a living computer program then an item, but later it was placed in
a receptical which looked like the TV Matrix. Also, in the comic
organic beings could possess the Matrix!
In Dreamwave comics it can reactivate masses of Cybertonians in an
emergency as well as most of the above items.
Anything else?

I'm not familiar with the Champions engine; is it really going to be
practical to list all of the Matrix' *specific* powers in the offchance
that you will need to use one of them during gameplay? I can see how
it would be handy to know ahead of time that it can let you communicate
with the spirits of the dead, or build a stronger body, etc., but
saying that it can also cure diseases or turn badguys into weeping,
stalactite-encrusted wartmonsters seems like it might just be begging
to bend the game around the artefact's utility, and not the other way
around.
Is there a way to put it in some generic category of, basically,
"Goodness Box / Granter of Wishes", activated only by such-and-such
level of ambient danger, something like that? Kind of like the Amulet
of NIMH, to mix genres a little.
I'd be interested in hearing more about how you plan on using this
universe and characters in your game, as well as if and how it does
actually go down right.
When I helped to script and GM the Decepticons LARP at VeriCon 3, I
wrote the Matrix as something that could nullify any single specific
historical event--it could bring a dead character back to life, or
prevent an ambush, or keep a rival from finding a power-up. And that
was IT. However, only its possessor would know that its power had been
consumed--everybody else would spend the rest of the game going, "ooh,
MATRIX!", and the player's ability to bluff would determine how things
progressed.
As memory serves, Starscream got the Matrix very early on and used it
to convince a lot of the other 'Cons to side with him against Megatron.
But then RID Scourge (yeah, I know) launched a nuclear missile at
everybody and so Starscream had to use the Matrix wish-power to make it
go away. And Blackarachnia won. (Yeah, I KNOW. I'm such a geek.) >> Stay informed about: What is the power of the Matrix? |

When did the Matrix activate Vector Sigma?

Just kidding. Seriously Mathew, it sounds like you hit all the ones that I
can think of myself. I'm sure there are more situtations, but I don't know
the comic continuity as well as some on this newsgroup. Any other takers?

Technically, it was always in that receptacle - it's just that no-one
knew about it, and Shockwave leeched the residual energy out of Prime's
head. Powermaster Prime's universe profile, by the by, describes the
Matrix as a computer program encoded in light patterns in a crystal.
In Beast Machines, they tried to reconcile some of these different
aspects (with a leaning towards the cartoon). Transformer life (Sparks)
were explained to come from an otherdimensional realm called the
Matrix, or the Allspark, from which all Sparks came, and all Sparks
returned to, creating a collective intelligence. It can comfortably be
rationed, therefore, that the actual physical Matrix of Leadership
object was not actually the receptacle indicated in G1, but rather a
gateway to the Matrix/Allspark realm, which could be opened by those
with an affinity for the object.
Similarly, this also works to explain why the Matrix could grant life
in the comics - transferring a Spark through the gateway.
The Allspark could be accessed via Vector Sigma (and directly communed
with via the Oracle program shell surrounding it at the time), which is
why VS could grant life.

As I said, the live-action roleplaying game about Transformers that was
held at VeriCon 3 in Harvard University a few years ago. I had been
aware of fan attempts to build large-scale LARPs (10+ players) ever
since Botcon '99, but this was my first attempt at putting one
together. Here's a more thorough account:

With all due respect I think that would be a mistake. As an artefact of
the Allspark it's almost akin with the Holy Grail or a manifest divine
will - to grant strength and wisdom to the worthy, to create and restore
robotic life, to cure disease, and to cleanse away the ultimate evil. In
other words it's a plot device!
If I was the GM I'd determine the exact points in the plot where it's own
intelligence will allow it to work and what it'll want to do. Then I
wouldn't tell the players and see if they can figure it out - like Magnus
and Hotrod in the film.
If the player wants to play one of the Primes then make him create a fully
rounded lower point character and then let the Matrix "add" x hundred
points of enhancements with some sort of limitation to account
for them loosing the Matrix - I suppose could be done with multiple forms,
but it's been a few years since I read the Champs rules. I'd also make
them take some sort of "rank" advantage to account for odd beneficial
plot device capability. >> Stay informed about: What is the power of the Matrix? |
