For the longest time it seems the game sizes for pickup games and league
nights has been 1850. Was wondering... with the GW RTT now 1500 points
and 1750 for the GT, are your FLGS adjusting to that or staying the same?

Seems some around here are still playing 1850 and even 2000 point games.

I've played anything from one to two thousand points for pick up
games. And the last RTT I played in was 1750. If I had to guess I'd
say a lot of the local pickup games are 1500 to 1750 points. You start
getting up towards the 2000 point range and folks can be pressed for
time an unable to finish the game from what I've noticed.

That's been my experience too... I think that may be one reason GW is
moving to the smaller size armies. Works for me.

I don't see GW being able to go 'larger' in Tournament style
settings. The problem in an RTT is that it's typically only a 'one
day' event and when you get up to 1750 points - it's very hard to get in
a full '6 turn' game in the time typically allotted. Which isn't
surprising considering that the goal is typically to have each player
complete 3 games in one day. Larger armies take longer to move
(particularly for forces like the minis heavy IG and Nids), and
especially with everyone wanting 'exact' movement measurements during
tournament play, etc. I saw plenty of games run out of time that were
only on turn 4 or 5 - even with 2 players who were highly experienced.

Hi all.
Our experience suggests us, (I mean me and my friends), 1500 points is the
right size.
Past week we played a one-day "internal tournament" with only 1000 points
each.
I know such an army could seem too small, but it permitted us to play 6 full
rounds in 90 minutes and 8 games.
Obviously we reduced battlefield dimensions too (to120x120cm).
[I know my English is terrible... please, be patient Surprised)]

And that brings up another good point... at what point values do you go
down in playing area? Obviously 500 point 40K in 40min battles need to
be on 4x4 tables and 2000 points needs a 6x4, but where do you guys drop
down to the 4x4? 1000points?

I have been playing alot of ~1000 point battles recently, all on 4x4. It
does allow for nice quick games, but it does not give a whole lot of
room for moving about. Either you place enough terrain on the table to
give shooty army's a really hard time or you don't place enough and all
the stabby armies get shot to pieces really early. In my opinion it's
more difficult to reach the same happy medium that you can with a 6x4.

I agree here. It's especially noticeable in Warhammer. During one
tournament game, my opponent and I only made it through three turns
(Empire vs Orcs), and ended up with a draw.

I'd agree with oeb - unless I'm playing a really small game (i.e.
sub 800 points) we normally stick with a 6x4 table. Battles tend to
cluster themselves anyway, but it's still nice to have some options and
room to maneuver.

IMO, 1500 pts is about right for a 4x6' table. It gives room to
maneuver, while needing to maneuver to find targets.

> Seems some around here are still playing 1850 and even 2000 point games.

Because you need more minis, and particularly more Troops.

IMO, 1500 pts is good for a 6x4' board, and 2000 pts needs a 8x4' board.
Up to 1000 pts would be reasonable for a 4x4' board.

We play 2000 point battles up here thats the new standard game and its played on a 6X4 table although we have a 22 foot by 4 foot we do this on and just mark it off on the table and we have a small 4X4 to the side

the group i'm with does 2k. though one person tends to use alot of
"stupid forge world tricks" and I've been lobbying to tone it down to
1500 to limit his foolishness.
